A construction career expo in Lakewood, New Jersey, brought local employers and vocational students together—but one event cannot establish what an entire generation wants from work. For Construction Pros’ October 6, 2026 story, “Who Said This Generation Doesn’t Want To Work? | Watch FCP,” describes the Ocean County Construction Career Expo as a local example of student interest and employer engagement, not proof of a broad generational trend.
What happened at the Ocean County Construction Career Expo?
Brandon Noel’s For Construction Pros article places the expo at a minor league ballpark in Lakewood, New Jersey. It reports that around 50 construction companies and a few hundred vocational students attended. The story also says the event has grown and that companies from other counties have asked to take part. These are attendance and growth details reported by the article, not independently verified counts.
The account points to a practical way employers and students can meet: a focused event where young people in vocational education can encounter construction companies and learn about opportunities in the field.
Does the expo show that young people want construction jobs?
It shows that vocational students participated in a construction career event and that employers attended. That is evidence of local engagement. It does not establish how many students intend to enter construction, whether they will take jobs in the industry, or what young people across the country think about construction careers.

The article does not cite a representative survey or broader study of young people’s work preferences. Its example therefore cannot settle a claim about an entire generation’s work ethic or career choices.
What can employers reasonably take from the story?
A local expo can create a point of contact between students and construction companies. The reported turnout suggests the format drew participation in Ocean County, while interest from companies in other counties suggests the event may have appeal beyond its immediate area. Neither detail, on its own, measures later hiring or retention.
