Paint on lumber ends can help control drying or identify boards within a mill’s or supplier’s own system. The color does not have a universal meaning for finished lumber sold at retail, so use the grade stamp, product tag, and supplier information—not the paint alone—to judge what a board is.
Why do mills paint the ends of lumber?
There are two distinct reasons you may see paint on a board’s end: to help manage moisture loss while wood dries, or to mark the board for identification. Which purpose applies depends on when and why the mark was put on; appearance alone cannot tell you.
To help limit drying-related end checks
Wood can lose moisture more quickly through exposed end grain than through its sides. During manufacture and drying, that uneven moisture loss can contribute to checks—cracks that start at the end and extend along the grain. The USDA Forest Products Laboratory describes checks and splits beginning at log ends or at fresh ends exposed during manufacturing, including in green lumber waiting in an open yard for kiln drying. It also identifies stickers placed too far from board ends as another cause. A coating on fresh ends can serve as a drying-control measure, but it is not proof that every painted board was coated for this reason, nor is it a guarantee against checking. USDA Forest Products Laboratory, “Drying and Control of Moisture Content and Dimensional Changes”.
For identification within a supplier’s system
A mill, supplier, or retailer may use color as an internal mark to sort or identify its products. The sources available do not establish a standard U.S. color key for the ends of finished retail boards. A blue, red, or green mark therefore has no reliable universal interpretation: ask the supplier that applied it if its meaning matters.
#1 Best Overall
- Maximum Protection: ANCHORSEAL 2 prevents up to 90% of end grain checking and drying splits in freshly cut wood, logs, and lumber, preserving the integrity and value of your wood projects by creating a protective barrier against moisture loss
- Versatile Application: Specially formulated for green wood sealing, this product is suitable for woodturning blanks, bowl blanks, lumber ends, log ends, and deck cuts, making it an essential solution for woodworkers, turners, and lumber professionals
- Easy to Use: The ready-to-apply formula can be brushed, rolled, or sprayed directly onto freshly cut end grain surfaces, providing quick and convenient protection without requiring mixing or special preparation
- Professional Grade: Designed specifically as an end grain sealer, this product works by slowing down the drying process at the vulnerable end grain areas where wood is most susceptible to cracking and splitting during the seasoning period
- Cost-Effective Solution: By significantly reducing wood waste from checking and splits, ANCHORSEAL 2 helps preserve more usable material from your logs and lumber, saving money and maximizing the yield from each piece of wood you process
Does the paint color tell you a board’s grade or treatment?
Not by itself. A plain color patch is not the same thing as an official lumber grade mark. NIST’s American Softwood Lumber Standard describes official grading marks as marks accepted by a grading agency; they can identify information such as the mill, agency, species, seasoning status where applicable, and grade. The standard defines grade-marked lumber as lumber displaying an agency’s official grading mark, which may be applied by stamps, ink-jet sprayers, tags, or other accepted methods. NIST, American Softwood Lumber Standard PS 20-10.
Look for a legible grade stamp or product tag and verify the board’s species, dimensions, grade, and intended use against the project requirements. Stamp formats and visibility vary; some appearance grades are seldom stamped because a mark could mar the product, and an absent stamp alone does not establish that a board is defective. For treated lumber, check the tag or product documentation for the treatment type, intended end use, applicable standards, and treating-facility identification. SPIB notes that grade stamps generally carry grade, moisture content, and mill identification, while treated lumber usually has a plastic tag with treatment details. Do not infer treatment or suitability for a particular exposure from end paint. Southern Pine Inspection Bureau, lumber grading.

Is painted lumber connected to federal log-marking rules?
There is a separate federal requirement covering paint and branding on certain unprocessed logs to identify origin or processing requirements. That rule applies to defined logs and circumstances; it is not a color code for ordinary finished lumber at a retail yard. 7 CFR § 360.5, Marking and branding requirements.
