DIY Ice Cleats for Traction on Snow and Ice: What’s Safe to Know

The available sources do not validate a homemade screw-on ice-cleat recipe. Clear and treat walkways, wear suitable footwear, walk slowly, and consider fitted over-shoe cleats with attention to surface transitions.

There is no validated homemade ice-cleat recipe in the sources reviewed. In particular, they do not establish that screwing sheet-metal screws into boot soles provides reliable traction or stays safely attached. For winter walking, clear and treat icy routes, wear suitable footwear, and slow down; if you need extra grip, consider purpose-made over-shoe cleats that fit your footwear and route.

Are DIY ice cleats made with screws a safe, proven fix?

Not on the evidence available here. A public discussion suggests using sheet-metal screws, but it provides no controlled information about traction, attachment reliability, compatibility with different soles, puncture protection, or injury risk. The official guidance cited below does not validate that construction or specify a safe screw length, pattern, or boot type.

That is an evidence limit, not proof that every homemade design is unsafe. It does mean a screw-based improvisation should not be presented as tested or as a dependable safety measure.

What to do before walking across ice

Clear and treat the route

When you can, avoid walking on ice and remove snow and ice from steps and walkways. The CDC fall-prevention guidance recommends keeping walkways as ice-free as possible with rock salt or another chemical deicing compound; it also notes that sand may reduce slipping risk. OSHA advises clearing snow and ice from walking surfaces and spreading deicer promptly after a storm in its winter-weather precautions.

Choose suitable footwear and adjust your pace

If you cannot avoid an icy walkway, OSHA recommends insulated, water-resistant boots with good rubber treads, or rubber over-shoes with good treads. It also advises: “Take short steps and walk at a slower pace so you can react quickly to a change in traction, when walking on an icy or snow-covered walkway.” See OSHA’s winter-weather guidance.

When purpose-made over-shoe cleats may be a better option

Purpose-made ice cleats are devices that fit over shoes or boots. Parks Canada’s winter-safety guidance describes them as an option that can make winter hiking safer on icy trails. That supports considering the product category; it does not establish that every model works equally well on every surface.

Consider surface changes along your route

Traction devices can behave differently across surfaces. CDC/NIOSH warns that pins or very narrow cleats may snag on open-mesh steps and can make walking on paved surfaces tricky. A device that grips one section may be awkward when you move onto pavement or a different kind of step. See CDC/NIOSH guidance on winter walking.
