6 Ways to Use Eggshells for Plants—and What They Won’t Do

Crushed shells belong in compost; finely ground shells can be a slow amendment when a soil test supports it. Seed-starting pots are another reuse, but eggshells are no quick calcium fix.

Eggshells have a few sensible second uses: add crushed shells to compost, use finely ground shells as a slow soil amendment only when a soil test indicates a calcium need, or turn clean shells into small seed-starting pots. They are not a quick calcium treatment, a reliable fix for blossom-end rot, or a proven slug barrier or household scrubber. Here are six practical uses and claims, with the limits made clear.

1. Add crushed shells to compost

Crushing shells before adding them to a compost pile is a straightforward way to reuse kitchen scraps. Smaller pieces break down sooner than whole or coarse shells, but composting them does not make their calcium immediately available to plants. The University of Illinois Extension and Penn State Extension both describe composting as a reasonable use for eggshells: University of Illinois Extension and Penn State Extension.

2. Use finely ground shells as a slow soil amendment

Eggshells are largely calcium carbonate. Grinding them finely increases their surface area and helps them break down sooner; intact or coarse pieces can remain visible in soil for a long time. Even finely ground shells act slowly, so they are not an instant calcium source. Use them as an amendment only if a soil test indicates that adding calcium is appropriate. The University of Illinois Extension explains the slow breakdown and the value of grinding shells in its garden and compost guidance.

3. Start seedlings in cleaned shell halves

Empty eggshell halves can serve as small, biodegradable seed-starting pots, as described by ABC Gardening Australia. Clean the shells and handle them carefully; they are fragile and offer little room for a seedling’s roots. Treat this as a way to reuse a container, not as a way to feed seedlings extra calcium or improve their growth.

4. Don’t rely on shells to prevent blossom-end rot

Blossom-end rot is not, by itself, proof that garden soil needs more calcium. A plant’s ability to take up water and nutrients is central to the problem, and adding eggshells will not reliably correct it. Because shell calcium becomes available slowly, it is especially unsuitable as a quick fix. Colorado State University Extension’s response, dated March 26, 2025, discusses why eggshells are not a dependable solution.

5. Treat eggshell-and-vinegar “calcium water” as an unverified hack

Mixing shells with vinegar is sometimes suggested as a way to make calcium water, but the resulting calcium concentration is unknown, and acetic acid may remain in the mixture. Applying an unknown-strength solution to leaves is not a sound workaround: leaves are not designed for nutrient uptake in the same way roots are. Soil testing is preferable, since excess calcium can interfere with other nutrients. See Ask Extension’s response on vinegar and eggshells.

6. Don’t count on shells to deter slugs or scrub household surfaces

Claims that eggshell fragments keep slugs away or that shells make an effective household scrubber are not substantiated by the extension and gardening sources cited here. That does not establish that no one uses shells this way; it means these sources do not support recommending either as a reliable use. For household cleaning in particular, the evidence cited here does not establish eggshells as a cleaning product.

Should you grind eggshells before using them?

Grinding changes how quickly shells can break down, not whether a garden needs calcium. Fine particles are more useful than large fragments when the goal is to speed decomposition, but shells still do not provide a fast correction. If you are considering a soil amendment, get a soil test and follow its recommendations rather than applying shells indiscriminately. Penn State Extension’s overview of eggshells and garden myths also cautions against treating shells as a quick plant remedy.
