Intarsia has two distinct craft meanings. In woodworking, it is a mosaic made from shaped pieces of wood fitted and glued into a wooden support. In knitting, it is colorwork that creates separate colored areas without carrying unused yarn across the back. The materials and methods are different; the shared name does not mean the techniques are related in practice.
What does intarsia mean in woodworking?
Woodworking intarsia builds an image or pattern by cutting individual wood sections to shape, fitting them together, and attaching them to a wooden support. Differences in wood species and color contribute to the picture, while shaped and contoured pieces can give the finished work a sculptural appearance.
Intarsia.com contrasts this with marquetry: in its description, marquetry assembles veneer patterns on a carcass, whereas intarsia uses fitted wood pieces on a support. The distinction is useful, though terminology can vary among makers and sources.
The same specialist seller says the technique was used in fifteenth-century Italy and credits Judy Gale Roberts with helping renew public awareness of modern woodworking intarsia. Those historical and revival claims are the seller’s account, not an independently established consensus. It identifies scroll saws and pneumatic or foam-based sanders among tools used in modern work. Intarsia.com

What does intarsia mean in knitting?
Knitting intarsia creates separate blocks of color to form an image or pattern in knitted fabric without carrying the unused yarn across the back. The result is a knitted color design, not a wood mosaic.
Sian Brown’s book Intarsia is described by its publisher as a practical guide that moves from fundamentals and practice to original designs. What a beginner woodworking project can involve
One documented beginner project from Intarsia.com is a seven-piece whale measuring 12½ by 4½ inches. For that particular pattern, the seller lists a scroll saw or bandsaw, contour sander, contrasting dark and white wood ¾ inch thick, ⅛-inch backing or shim material, pattern copies, repositionable adhesive, a ⅛-inch dowel and drill bit, and woodworker’s glue. An air compressor, carving knife, and wood burner are described as handy extras, not required items.
Those dimensions and materials belong to this whale project; they are not universal specifications. Intarsia.com’s free-pattern page also lists other examples, including “Cardinal on Pine Bough,” a beginner/intermediate 29-piece pattern, and “Oh Hoot,” a beginner/intermediate 33-piece pattern. The page does not state a publication date. Check the requirements for the specific pattern before selecting materials or tools. Intarsia.com free patterns
