8 Enduring Houseplant and Gardening Tips for Healthier Plants

Use plant needs and local conditions—not habit or the calendar—to guide these eight practical tips for healthier houseplants and gardens.

These eight practical tips bring together enduring advice for houseplants and gardens: match plants to available light, water according to soil moisture, and make planting and care decisions based on the plant and site. They are a useful gardening guide, not a verified selection from a particular publication’s 25-year archive.

1. Choose plants for the light you actually have

Notice how much direct sun a spot receives and how long it lasts before choosing a plant. Too little light can lead to pale, stretched growth and poor flowering; excessive light can scorch or bleach leaves. A full-spectrum LED grow light can help when a houseplant does not get enough window light, but it is not necessary for every plant.

Move a plant into stronger spring sunlight gradually over one to two weeks rather than placing it in intense sun all at once. Low-light plants generally grow more slowly and use less water, so check their soil before watering. University of Minnesota Extension’s spring houseplant care guidance explains how light and seasonal conditions affect care.

2. Water according to the soil, not a calendar

For houseplants

As a general spring check, water when the upper inch of soil feels dry. Treat that as a starting point, not a fixed schedule: a plant’s size, light, temperature, and season all affect how quickly its soil dries. Use a pot with drainage holes, and empty the saucer so the plant is not left standing in water.

For outdoor beds

Water at the base of plants, aiming for a deep soak rather than frequent shallow watering. Check soil moisture instead of relying on a routine interval. These are general recommendations, not a universal schedule for every plant, soil, or climate. University of Minnesota Extension’s houseplant watering guidance and outdoor watering advice offer further detail.

3. Test garden soil before adding fertilizer

A soil test can show pH and nutrient levels and help determine whether an amendment is needed. The University of Minnesota Extension recommends testing every three to five years and when a site’s use changes, such as when converting lawn to garden. Follow the results rather than applying fertilizer by habit, especially phosphorus: repeated excess applications can contribute to water-quality problems.

The University of Minnesota Soil Testing Laboratory’s results from 1988–2021 showed a median phosphorus reading of 68 ppm (Bray) for Minnesota lawns and gardens, compared with 26 ppm for farm fields. The Extension page says 20 ppm is sufficient for vegetables and more than sufficient for lawns. These figures describe Minnesota lab results and should not be applied as universal thresholds across regions or soil-test methods. Read the University of Minnesota Extension guidance on soil testing.

4. Mulch beds to conserve moisture and protect soil

Organic mulch can suppress weeds, conserve moisture, moderate soil temperature, reduce erosion, and add organic matter as it breaks down. A general layer of 2–4 inches is recommended by University of Minnesota Extension, but keep mulch clear of trunks and stems. Thick, matted grass clippings can restrict airflow.

Choose material for the planting and how long you want it to last. Straw is commonly used in vegetable beds; wood chips or bark last longer around trees and perennials. University of Minnesota Extension’s mulching guidance covers use and placement.

5. Plant by crop and soil conditions, not just the date

Different crops tolerate cold differently, so a date on the calendar cannot tell you by itself whether conditions are right. Soil temperature is a useful indicator for vegetable planting; check it with a soil thermometer or consult a reliable local soil-temperature resource. Before planting transplants outdoors, harden them off gradually to reduce transplant shock.

6. Prune flowering shrubs with their bloom cycle in mind

For spring-flowering shrubs that set next year’s flower buds on old growth, prune after they finish blooming. Their next season’s buds form over summer and fall, so pruning at the wrong time can remove them. This timing is specific to those shrubs, not a rule for every species; identify the plant before pruning. The University of Minnesota Extension May gardening checklist explains this seasonal recommendation.

7. Check plants for pests and act early

Inspect both sides of leaves, and check new plants before bringing them home or indoors for winter. Keep new or returning plants separate from established ones while you look for pests. Good growing conditions, adequate drainage, clean foliage, and removal of dead plant material can help reduce pest problems.

If you use a pesticide, follow its label and confirm that it is approved for indoor use and appropriate for the specific plant. University of Minnesota Extension’s houseplant insect-control guidance discusses prevention and treatment.

8. Make space for pollinators with locally suitable flowers

Include flowering plants that provide resources when pollinators may have fewer options. University of Minnesota Extension names asters and goldenrod as fall options and also describes winter sowing native seeds in containers. Suitable species vary by region and site, so consult a local native-plant organization or Extension service before choosing plants; Minnesota examples are not automatically appropriate elsewhere.

University of Minnesota Extension’s fall pollinator-plant guidance offers Minnesota-specific examples, while its winter-sowing instructions explain one way to start native seeds.
