Compass CNC V1 is presented as an open-source handheld CNC router that lets an operator guide the tool by hand while a three-axis system corrects its movement. The design aims to bring computer-guided motion to tasks such as contour cutting, engraving and inlays without the fixed work area of a conventional CNC setup. Those are the project’s stated goals, not independently measured performance results.

What is Compass CNC V1?

In a July 18, 2025 launch article, Make described Compass CNC V1 as a handheld router that combines direct operator guidance with CNC motion assistance. Instead of positioning the workpiece under a stationary gantry, the user moves the router over the workpiece while its motion system adjusts the cut. The concept is aimed at people who want a tactile, hand-guided process with computer-directed assistance.

The description may be relevant to makers who find steady manual routing difficult, but it is not evidence of a medical or accessibility benefit. The announcement does not provide user testing or measured performance data. Make’s announcement is the source for the design and intended workflow.

How the motion system is described

Make reports a three-axis motion system and four embedded optical-flow sensors. The sensors track movement over the work surface, so the design does not require fiducial tape or a camera setup, according to the announcement. The operator still guides the handheld device; the system is described as correcting that motion while cutting.

BOSCH PR20EVS Colt 1.0 HP Variable-Speed Palm Router, Quick-Clamp System
  • PR20EVS Colt Palm Router is a trim router with a 1.0 Horse Power 5.6 amp variable speed motor and speeds from 16,000 to 35,000 RPM
  • CONVENIENT: The wood router provides a straight edge guide to lead router along edges of work piece or up to 3-5/8 inch from edge; also features an angled cord exit to keep the cord out of the way when working
  • DURABLE: The compact router features a rugged aluminum fixed base that is durable, solid and precise; the PR20EVS has unique finger support pockets for additional stability, especially when trimming edges
  • PRECISION: This router tool features a fast and precise depth adjustment system that allows both macro and micro adjustment, while the quick clamp system allows motor to be easily adjusted or moved from base to base
  • VERSATILE: This BOSCH router for woodworking provides enhanced bit capacity with a fixed base that accepts bits up to 1 5/16 inch in diameter; versatile bit changing system allows easy bit changes using two wrenches or spindle lock and one wrench

The structure uses stacked plates, linear rails, a CoreXY motion system and belt routing. The article says the low, rigid arrangement is intended to support tool stability and dust collection. It does not report accuracy, repeatability, cutting speed or dust-capture measurements, so those design intentions should not be treated as verified results.

What work is it intended to do?

The launch coverage names 3D contours, engravings and inlays as target applications. The described workflow uses standard CAD/CAM software to prepare a job, then has the operator guide the router within its working range as motion assistance is applied. That may suit projects where a maker wants a hand-guided feel but also wants a toolpath to inform the cut.

The announcement does not specify a work envelope, compatible software list, supported materials, bit limitations or demonstrated cut quality. Those details matter when deciding whether a particular project can be completed safely and reliably with the tool.

How it differs from a fixed CNC router or hand routing

Compass CNC occupies a different workflow from both a fixed CNC router and a conventional handheld router. It should be evaluated as a distinct approach rather than assumed to replace either one.

Decision factor Compass CNC V1, as described What to establish for your project
Work envelope and portability Handheld design; a specific working range is not stated in Make’s July 18, 2025 announcement. Confirm the usable area, the surfaces it can track, and how the workpiece must be secured.
Operator control The user guides the tool while a three-axis system is described as correcting motion. Determine how much direct control remains and what happens at the edge of the working range.
Setup and workflow CAD/CAM-based workflow with optical-flow sensing; the announcement says no fiducial tape or camera setup is needed. Check the current software and file requirements and how toolpaths are transferred or used.
Precision No accuracy or repeatability figures are reported by Make. Look for measured results relevant to your material, tool and intended cut.
Dust handling The structural layout is said to help dust collection; no collection measurements are supplied. Inspect the dust-collection arrangement and its compatibility with your extractor.
Build effort and cost Make says files can be downloaded to build the project or a kit can be purchased; current kit details and price are not stated. Verify parts, tools, assembly requirements, kit contents, price and availability with the project.

Build it or buy a kit?

Make’s article says the project is open source and describes two routes: downloading files to build the machine or purchasing a kit. It does not establish the kit’s present availability, price, contents or current hardware revision. Check the project’s own current information before planning a build or purchase; do not assume an older launch announcement reflects what is available now.

What the announcement does—and does not—prove

Make’s July 18, 2025 coverage is a launch announcement, not a hands-on review. It reports the design features and the intended applications, but publishes no independent test results or quantitative performance figures. Treat claims about precision, rigidity and dust handling as design descriptions until supported by measured results for the current version.

For a construction or shop project, the practical questions are whether the working range accommodates the piece, whether the CAD/CAM workflow fits your process, and whether the current build or kit provides the parts and support you need. The announcement supplies a concept and a route to investigate, not enough evidence to rank Compass CNC against a fixed CNC router or hand tools.
