Best Plants for Landscaping Around a Backyard Fire Pit

Use a clear, noncombustible area around the fire pit, then choose and maintain regionally suitable plants farther out. No plant is fireproof, and home wildfire spacing rules are not fire-pit clearance standards.

For a safer, easier-to-maintain fire-pit area, keep the immediate surround clear of plants and use paving or another noncombustible surface. Place plant beds farther out, choosing species that suit your climate and have moist, broad leaves, open branching, little resin, and minimal dead growth. Bearded iris, blanket flower, hydrangea, viburnum, beautyberry, and red yucca are examples in regional fire-wise guides—not universally suitable plants or fireproof barriers.

Keep the fire pit’s immediate area clear

Set a fire pit on a patio or in an area clear of grass and brush. UF/IFAS advises placing outdoor fires at least 10 feet from houses and overhanging branches; check local codes and current fire conditions as well as the fire-pit maker’s instructions. Its guidance does not specify a tested clearance for ornamental plants, so do not treat a particular plant-bed distance as a universal safety rule. See UF/IFAS outdoor fire safety guidance.

Consider wind before lighting a fire, keep water, an extinguisher, or dry sand nearby, and fully extinguish the fire when you are finished. A paved or otherwise clear area gives the pit separation from vegetation; flowers, mulch, and low groundcover are not substitutes for that clear zone.

Choose plants by traits, not a “fireproof” label

No plant is fireproof. Some plants have traits associated with lower flammability, but that does not mean they will resist direct flame, sparks, radiant heat, or drought damage. A plant that is dry, stressed, or carrying dead material can present more fuel than a healthy, maintained one.

Oregon State University Extension identifies loose or open branching, little dead wood, waterlike or low-odor sap, little resin, and wide, moist, supple leaves as traits associated with lower flammability. Fine dry material, volatile oils or waxes, aromatic foliage, gummy resinous sap, and loose or papery bark are traits associated with higher flammability. Ornamental-plant flammability research is limited, so use these as selection cues rather than a guarantee. Read OSU Extension’s guide to fire-resistant plants for home landscapes.

Regional plants to consider

These examples come from regional extension guidance. Check each plant’s climate and hardiness fit, sun and soil needs, mature size, water requirements, invasiveness, and maintenance needs before planting.

Perennials listed for Nevada

University of Nevada, Reno Extension includes bearded iris, blanket flower, candytuft, columbine, evening primrose, geranium, goldenrod, lupine, orange butterfly weed, and ornamental onion among its firescaping examples. The list is Nevada-oriented, not a universal prescription. See UNR Extension’s Nevada firescaping guidelines.

Shrubs and other broad-leaved plants listed for Florida

UF/IFAS names azalea, viburnum, hydrangea, beautyberry, camellia, coontie, anise, Indian hawthorn, oakleaf hydrangea, pittosporum, and red yucca among its fire-wise examples. These are Florida guidance examples; their inclusion does not mean they are suitable for every region or safe next to active flames. See UF/IFAS Firewise Landscaping.

Plants rated in Colorado’s framework

Colorado State University Extension lists pink evening primrose (Oenothera speciosa; rating 8), Oriental poppy (rating 9), and Delosperma species (rating 10) in its 0–10 framework, where 0 is most flammable and 10 least flammable. Those scores belong to that particular framework; they are not universal ratings or fire-pit safety measurements. See CSU Extension’s low-flammability plant guide.

Arrange beds to avoid continuous fuel

Put plant beds beyond the clear fire-pit area and break up vegetation with nonflammable hardscape such as gravel or stepping-stone paths. UF/IFAS also describes maintained lawn as a possible break between groups. Avoid creating a continuous run of foliage from the fire area toward a house, deck, tree canopy, or eaves.

Guidance for spacing plants around a home is not the same as a tested fire-pit clearance. OSU’s home-ignition-zone guidance recommends avoiding plant material within 5 feet of the home, using well-maintained fire-resistant plants in the 5–30-foot zone, and leaving 10 feet or more between plant groupings, with wider spacing on slopes. UNR gives a general firescaping spacing rule of two to three times the mature height of a plant or grouping. These are defensible-space recommendations around structures, not distances certified for placing plants around a recreational fire pit. Consult the original OSU guidance and UNR guidance in their intended context.

Maintain plants and hardscape

  • Remove dead leaves, dry stems, and branches before they accumulate.
  • Prune to keep plants healthy and prevent dense, neglected growth; avoid ladder fuels that could carry fire into shrubs or trees.
  • Water plants as needed through dry periods. OSU notes that most plants on its regional lists need some summer irrigation in drier areas.
  • Keep plant groups separated by hardscape or another maintained break, and check that mulch is not encroaching on the clear fire area. UF/IFAS notes that mulch can be flammable.
  • Choose mature sizes that will not crowd the pit, structures, branches, or eaves as plants grow.

Match the planting to your site

Before buying, compare local climate and hardiness, soil, sun, heat, wind, and rainfall with each plant’s needs. Consider mature height and width, water use, dead-material buildup, branching, and resin or oil content. Also check whether the plant is invasive locally and whether its upkeep fits the time and irrigation you can provide. OSU recommends consulting local Extension guidance or a knowledgeable nursery because regional suitability varies and available ornamental-flammability research is limited.

As OSU Extension horticulturist Amy Jo Detweiler put it, “The idea of creating a fire-wise landscape is starting the landscape farther from the home and thinking about plant materials that will be less flammable. You think about placement, design and the plants you’re putting in the landscape.” The same design principle is useful around a fire-pit area, but the home-focused spacing rules should not be mistaken for appliance clearances.
