Add kitchen, bathroom, living and dining pieces next; wait on extra appliances and decor until you know how you use the rooms.
Before you shop: check, measure and set priorities
An apartment described as unfurnished may still include appliances, light fixtures, window coverings, closet storage or other furnishings. Walk through each room and note what is present and what is missing; photographs can help when comparing furniture or planning where things will go. Check your lease before planning alterations such as installing hardware or making holes in walls. Measure the rooms and the path each large item must travel: entry doors, hallways, stairways, elevators and turns can matter as much as the intended spot. Compare a bed or sofa’s actual dimensions with both the room and its delivery route rather than relying on a generic “small apartment” label. Before placing an order, confirm that delivery and assembly are available and workable for your building.
Set a total spending limit and leave room for delivery, assembly, cleaning supplies and the smaller items needed to make a room usable. Furniture is the biggest budget variable, according to Apartments.com. Buying used can lower costs when the item’s condition, hygiene and transport work for you. Bedroom: make sleep the first priority
Buy first
Start with a mattress and a suitable bed setup, plus sheets, pillows and a comforter or duvet. Check whether a bed or frame is already included, and choose sizes that fit both the room and the existing setup. The CFPB’s Summer 2022 furnishing worksheet treats bedding as one of the choices to plan for when furnishing a first apartment.
Add only what is missing
Then check whether you need curtains, a lamp, hangers, a dresser or clothes rack, a nightstand and a laundry hamper. Existing window coverings, installed lighting and closet capacity can make some of these unnecessary at move-in. If the apartment is a studio, the sleeping area may share space with the living area, so consider how a bed or storage will affect the rest of the room.

Living room and flexible work area: furnish for how you spend time
Start with seating and useful light
Choose seating that fits the room and suits your household. Add a lamp if the installed lighting does not serve the space and storage if you need a place for everyday belongings. In a studio or small home, a daybed or sleeper sofa can also provide guest sleeping; benches and storage coffee tables may serve more than one purpose.
Make a work spot without overcommitting
If you work or study at home, a dining surface may double as a desk, or a desk may fit in a bedroom corner. Decide based on your routine and available space rather than assuming each activity needs a separate piece of furniture. Room dividers can help distinguish areas where one room has several functions, but check your lease before attaching anything to walls or ceilings.

Leave optional pieces until you know you want them
A TV, media console, rug, pillows and decorative accessories are choices, not baseline requirements. Add them when they suit your use of the room, the lease, the available space and the remaining budget. The Home Depot guide recommends working one room at a time and prioritizing key pieces over accessories.
Dining: match the setup to the household
Choose a table or other eating surface and seating based on how many people live in the apartment and how often you host. If a full table will not fit, counter seating may be enough. A drop-leaf table can take up less room when folded and open when needed. Basic dishes, glasses and flatware are useful; the number of place settings should reflect the household rather than a larger entertaining setup you may not use.

Kitchen: cover everyday cooking before buying appliances
Move-in basics
A practical starter set includes a chef’s knife, cutting board, skillet, saucepan, cooking utensils and can opener, along with dish soap, a sponge, paper towels, a dish rack or drying mat, dishes and basic silverware. Choose quantities that suit how often you cook and how many people use the kitchen.
Add tools as your cooking habits call for them
A sheet pan, bowls, colander, measuring cups, food storage containers and dish towels can be added as needed. Small appliances deserve a separate decision: buy one when it supports recipes or routines you already expect to use and when you have counter or storage space for it. Apartments.com groups several small appliances among later purchases, while Crate & Barrel’s first-apartment checklist advises choosing appliances around the recipes you make. An appliance that rarely gets used can take up valuable space as well as money.

Bathroom: check what is installed before filling gaps
First look for a shower curtain, towel hardware, storage and any existing furnishings. If needed, start with bath and hand towels, a bath mat, a shower curtain, toiletries, soap and cleaning supplies. Add organizers only after checking what storage and surfaces are actually available; a compact bathroom may not have room for extras. The reviewed page did not show a publication or update date, and the figures are not independently verified current prices. Local costs, what the apartment already includes, household needs and secondhand purchases can all change the total.
