Fabric softener conditions laundry rather than cleaning it. Its coating can make fabrics feel softer and help reduce static, but it is optional: detergent does the washing, and you can skip softener if you do not want its effects or if a garment’s care needs make it a poor fit.
What fabric softener does
Fabric softener, also called fabric conditioner, leaves conditioning ingredients on fibers. Many products use positively charged surfactants that attach to negatively charged fibers, lubricating them and reducing friction. That is the basic mechanism behind the softer feel and anti-static effect. The American Cleaning Institute describes this mechanism and intended benefits at its fabric softener guide.
Manufacturers also describe reduced wrinkles and added scent as intended effects. These are product-purpose claims, not quantified performance guarantees: results can vary by product, fabric, dose, and laundry routine. Liquid conditioners, dryer sheets, and packets are delivered at different points in the process, so follow the product directions and your washer instructions for the form you use.
Do you need fabric softener?
No. Detergent is the product that cleans; softener is an optional conditioning step for people who prefer a softer feel or want less static. Bosch UK says conditioner is “by no means compulsory” in its guidance on fabric conditioner. If you are satisfied with how your laundry feels without it, there is no need to add it.

When to skip it or use caution
Softener leaves ingredients on fibers, so consider what a fabric needs to do as well as how it feels. Check the garment care label and softener label; when in doubt, skip it for items whose absorbency, moisture management, water repellency, or flame resistance matters.
- Towels: Skip softener when maximum absorbency is the priority. Appliance-maker guidance from Whirlpool and Maytag advises caution with towels. The American Cleaning Institute offers a more permissive industry view: it says using the right amount need not compromise towel function. Since advice differs and products and fabrics vary, let the towel’s care instructions and your absorbency needs guide you.
- Workout and moisture-wicking clothes: Maytag and Whirlpool flag athleticwear for caution. The American Cleaning Institute says properly dosed softener need not compromise moisture-wicking performance in some modern products. Because the guidance is not uniform, follow the garment label and skip softener if preserving performance is more important than softness.
- Microfiber cleaning cloths: Appliance-maker guidance advises avoiding softener on microfiber. If the cloth is meant to capture dirt or absorb liquid, use it without conditioner and follow its care instructions.
- Water-repellent fabrics and flame-resistant clothing: Whirlpool flags water-repellent fabrics and flame-resistant clothing; Maytag also advises against softener on flame-resistant children’s sleepwear. Follow the item’s care label and do not use softener where its instructions prohibit it.
- Cloth diapers and swimwear: Maytag lists both among items to avoid treating with softener. Check the specific item’s care instructions.
Maytag also warns that overuse can cause product buildup. Consumer Reports quotes laundry test project leader Rich Handel cautioning that residue may irritate sensitive skin and affect towel absorbency; this is attributed advice, not a quantified finding. If fragrance or sensitivity is a concern, consider skipping scented products rather than assuming a formula is suitable without checking its label.
Rank #2
- 2 in 1: Soft and Fresh
- 3X more freshness** ** Longer-lasting scent vs. Tide Original liquid.
- April Fresh scent
- Just measure and pour into your washer’s fabric softener dispenser drawer or directly into the agitator for long-lasting freshness

How to use it without overdoing it
- Check the care label on the item and confirm that softener is allowed.
- Read the softener label and measure the recommended amount; do not assume more will make laundry softer.
- Use the washer’s designated softener dispenser when provided, and follow the washer instructions for the product type.
- Do not pour softener directly onto dry clothes. Maytag’s directions and cautions are at Maytag’s fabric softener guide.
Fabric softener, dryer balls, or no additive?
The choice depends on what you want and what the fabric needs. Dryer balls are a different, optional approach—not a proven equivalent to softener. Whirlpool suggests them as an alternative, including unscented options, while the American Cleaning Institute notes that they may help with drying or wrinkles but do not provide the same fiber conditioning and protection claimed for softeners.
| Choice | What it offers | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Fabric softener | Conditions fibers for a softer feel; intended to help reduce static and add scent. | May not suit items where absorbency, moisture wicking, water repellency, or flame resistance matters. Measure it and check labels. |
| Dryer balls | An unscented option some people prefer; may help with drying or wrinkles, according to the sources above. | They do not condition fibers in the same way as softener, and no comparative performance figure is established in these sources. |
| No additive | A simple choice when you do not want extra scent or conditioning. | You forgo softener’s intended softness and static-control effects. |
Choose according to your goal—soft feel, less static, or no added scent—alongside the fabric’s care requirements and your willingness to add another laundry product. No single option is right for every load.
