Start with the shape of the job
Zesters, rasp-style graters and box graters overlap, but they do not produce the same range of results. Choose by the ingredient and the texture you want, then consider grip, storage and cleaning.
Rasp-style zester for fine zest and grating
Microplane describes its Premium Classic zester/grater as suitable for citrus, hard cheese, ginger, chocolate, nutmeg, truffle and spices. Its international product page identifies the black model as product 46020, with a photo-etched stainless-steel blade made in the USA and 400 micro-teeth. The listed dimensions are 32.5 × 3.5 × 3.0 cm, with a grating surface of 20.3 × 2.5 cm. These are manufacturer specifications, not independent test findings: Microplane International’s product page.
Box grater for several cuts
A box grater makes sense when one tool needs to handle different textures. Microplane’s 4-sided model has fine, extra-coarse, ribbon and slicing blades, with a removable fine blade for cleaning. The maker describes the fine face for citrus zest and Parmesan, and the other faces for soft cheese, vegetables, shredding and slicing. It lists a non-slip handle, rubber feet and a reusable protective cover; the international page gives dimensions of 27 × 13 × 8.8 cm. Use stability and storage to break a tie
If you mainly need a narrow tool for fine zesting, the rasp format is the more direct match. If you routinely switch between fine and coarse grating or want a slicing face, a box grater combines those options. The box grater’s listed rubber feet and non-slip handle address stability, while its protective cover and the rasp’s reusable cover help protect the blades in storage. Consider where the tool will live and whether a wider, multi-sided tool is worth the space.

Clean promptly and handle the blades carefully
Microplane advises tapping food residue off soon after use, rinsing the blades under running water and allowing the grater to drip-dry. Although the maker says most graters are dishwasher-safe, it recommends hand washing to help preserve blade sharpness; protective covers should be hand washed. Its walnut-handled Master Series graters are an exception to general dishwasher guidance: hand wash them and do not soak them. See Microplane’s care and handling guidance. The maker describes the blades as extremely sharp, so take care while using, washing and storing either format.
