What did the LG compressor settlement cover?
A complaint filed in 2019 alleged premature compressor failures and proposed a mechanism involving the compressor and evaporator. In September 2020, settlement parties announced an agreement concerning claims about compressor-related no-cooling events and warranty and repair service for certain LG refrigerator models manufactured between January 1, 2014, and December 31, 2017. The settlement’s date range and model list determine whether a refrigerator may be covered; the settlement does not show that every LG refrigerator was eligible or prove a universal design defect. A legal-investigation page updated in February 2026 describes allegations involving refrigerators sold after 2018. That shows later claims have been made, but allegations do not establish a defect in current models or determine whether any production change succeeded. See the later investigation material.

What reliability data is available?
Consumer Reports reported that its 2019 member survey found compressor problems in 8% of sampled LG French-door refrigerators, compared with 3% of refrigerators overall. This historical result describes that survey’s sample and category, not every LG refrigerator or the failure rate of a current model. The available sources do not provide a newer, comparable, independent failure-rate figure broken down by LG model. Complaints, lawsuits and manufacturer technology statements are not substitutes for that kind of statistical evidence.

Has LG documented a corrective redesign?
LG’s corporate material describes intended benefits of its inverter linear compressor, including reduced friction and improved efficiency and durability. Those are the manufacturer’s design claims. The material does not identify a corrective redesign tied to the settlement, show that a claimed failure mode was eliminated, or provide a field-failure comparison before and after a change. How to check your model and warranty
- Find the complete model number. Use the refrigerator’s product label and retain the serial number and purchase date. Do not assume eligibility from the LG brand name or “linear compressor” description alone.
- Check settlement eligibility if the refrigerator may date from 2014–2017. Compare its exact model and manufacturing date with the settlement’s terms and model list. Review the settlement information.
- Read the warranty for that exact model, market and purchase date. A surfaced U.S. LG warranty form lists parts-only coverage for the linear/inverter compressor in years six through ten, with labor charged to the consumer during that period. This term is specific to that document; it is not a guarantee for every LG model or market. Consult the surfaced U.S. warranty document.
- Ask LG or a qualified technician to confirm coverage and service terms. LG’s U.S. support page directs owners to warranty information and LG Direct Service for out-of-warranty repairs. What to do if an LG refrigerator stops cooling
No cooling is a symptom, not proof that the compressor has failed. Arrange a diagnosis before buying a part or deciding that the refrigerator needs compressor replacement. Check warranty coverage first, then ask the service provider to identify the failed component, explain whether parts and labor are covered, and provide the repair estimate. Compressor replacement involves a sealed refrigeration system; any replacement part must be matched to the exact model rather than treated as universally compatible.
