Make a Christmas tree garland from what you already have: leftover ribbon, beads and cord, paper or felt, or natural and repurposed materials. The ideas below are adaptable starting points, not a tested ranking. Choose materials and placement with your tree’s lights and heat sources in mind.
Choose a garland that suits your tree
Before gathering supplies, consider the look you want, how much time you have, and whether the materials can be reused. Cost and difficulty below are practical estimates, not measured project results. Use leftovers where possible; buying new supplies is not necessary.

12 garland ideas to make with household supplies
These are flexible concepts based on common craft, ribbon, natural, and household materials. Adapt the materials to what you have, and follow the safety guidance below; no material should be assumed safe simply because it is handmade.
1. Ribbon loops
- Gather: leftover ribbon and string or craft cord.
- Make it: Cut ribbon into manageable lengths. Tie each piece to the cord in a loose loop or bow, spacing the pieces to suit your tree. Add more ribbon until the garland reaches the length you need.
2. Ribbon streamers
- Gather: narrow ribbon in one or more colors and cord, if you want a continuous strand.
- Make it: Cut ribbon into even lengths. Tie or knot each piece along the cord, or drape the separate streamers around the tree. Vary the colors or keep to one shade for a simpler look.
3. Beads on cord
- Gather: beads and craft cord, thick ribbon, or rope.
- Make it: Thread beads onto the chosen strand, alternating sizes or colors if available. Tie a secure knot at each end so the beads stay in place.
4. Paper circles
- Gather: paper from your craft supplies or clean household paper, scissors, and string or cord.
- Make it: Cut circles from the paper. Attach them at intervals to the string by folding each circle over it and securing the fold, or by making a small hole and threading the circle onto the strand.
5. Paper stars
- Gather: paper, scissors, and cord or string.
- Make it: Cut out stars in a consistent or mixed range of sizes. Fold a small tab at the top of each star over the cord and secure it, or punch a hole and thread the stars on.
6. Paper chains
- Gather: strips of paper and tape, glue, or a stapler.
- Make it: Form the first strip into a loop and join its ends. Pass the next strip through the loop before joining it, repeating until the chain reaches the desired length.
7. Felt shapes
- Gather: felt scraps, scissors, and cord or ribbon.
- Make it: Cut simple shapes such as circles, stars, or trees. Attach them to the strand with small slits near the top, or secure each shape with a short piece of thread or cord.
8. Felt bows
- Gather: felt scraps, scissors, and string or cord.
- Make it: Cut strips of felt and tie each into a bow, or pinch the center and wrap it with a narrow felt strip. Attach the bows at intervals along a cord.
9. Natural-material strand
- Gather: suitable natural materials you already have, plus cord or string. Choose pieces that can be attached securely.
- Make it: Arrange the materials in a repeating pattern, then attach them to the cord with knots or loops. Inspect the strand before hanging and remove anything that is brittle or shedding.
10. Mixed natural and ribbon garland
- Gather: suitable natural materials, leftover ribbon, and cord if needed.
- Make it: Alternate natural pieces with ribbon bows or loops along a cord. Keep the spacing balanced and secure each component so it cannot slide into a light bulb.
11. Reused-material shapes
- Gather: clean, flexible household material suitable for cutting, plus scissors and cord.
- Make it: Cut repeated shapes from the material and attach them to the cord with folded tabs, small holes, or knots, depending on the material. Do not use anything that becomes brittle, sheds, or is unsuitable near a lit tree.
12. A mixed-material stash garland
- Gather: leftover ribbon, beads, paper or felt shapes, and cord. Use only materials suitable for the intended display.
- Make it: Lay out a repeating sequence before assembling. Thread beads onto the cord, tie on ribbon, and attach lightweight shapes at intervals. Keep the pattern simple enough that the finished strand hangs evenly.
Hang handmade garlands more safely
Handmade decoration does not remove the fire risks associated with a Christmas tree. The U.S. Fire Administration says, “Almost one-third of home Christmas tree fires are caused by electrical problems.” Its page does not state the statistic’s publication year. The agency’s holiday fire-safety guidance advises checking light strands, following their manufacturer’s instructions, watering a live tree daily, and keeping it at least three feet from heat sources.

- Inspect lights before use and discard strands with frayed or pinched wires. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for how many strands may be connected.
- Keep garlands clear of bulbs, flames, and other heat sources. The London Fire Brigade advises LED lights, which use less energy and stay cooler than older incandescent bulbs; it also warns that bulbs can heat materials such as paper and fabric.
- Use only non-combustible or flame-resistant materials to trim a tree, as advised by HealthyChildren.org. Paper and fabric are not fireproof, so do not assume handmade garlands made from them are suitable close to lights.
- Keep exits clear, water a live tree daily, and remove it after Christmas or when it becomes dry. The U.S. Fire Administration cautions: “A dry Christmas tree can burn very hot and very fast.”
- Do not put lit candles on or near the tree.
Make the idea fit what you own
Start with a material you can use safely, then choose a simple construction method: tie it onto ribbon or cord, thread it, fold it into a chain, or attach lightweight shapes. For a quick project, use leftover ribbon or beads; for a more customizable strand, cut paper or felt shapes; for a natural look, combine suitable natural pieces with ribbon. Inspect the finished garland and its placement before lighting the tree.
