For an older dishwasher leaving food on dishes, Cascade Platinum ActionPacs with Dawn is a reasonable first detergent to try: Consumer Reports named it the most effective tested detergent among pods and gels in its guide updated May 8, 2026. That is a test result, not a guarantee for every appliance. The right next step depends on whether you see food residue, tea or coffee stains, white mineral film, or water spots—and on what your dishwasher’s manual allows.
Which detergent is a good first choice?
Consumer Reports tested nearly 30 dishwasher detergents and ranked Cascade Platinum ActionPacs with Dawn highest among the pods and gels in its May 8, 2026 guide. Its evaluations considered cleaning as well as resistance to film and spots, so the recommendation is more useful than a claim based on stain removal alone. Formulas, availability, water conditions, and individual machines can affect results.
In those Consumer Reports tests, detergent packs generally cleaned better than most gels, although results varied by product. Packs offer convenient premeasured doses; powder and liquid can offer more flexibility, but use only a format and amount permitted by your dishwasher’s manual and the detergent label. The dispenser is designed to release detergent at a particular point in the cycle, so don’t place a tablet somewhere else unless the manual says to.
Consumer Reports listed prices ranging from 7 to 57 cents per load across products in its 2026 guide. Those are a dated snapshot, not current or guaranteed prices. Compare the cost per load shown for the product you can buy, alongside cleaning, residue, and convenience.

Match the detergent choice to the residue
Food left on dishes
For ordinary food soil or baked-on residue, start with fresh automatic dishwasher detergent, correct loading, and the dose specified by the label and appliance manual. If particles remain, detergent may not be the only issue: a dirty filter or obstructed spray arm can interfere with washing. Bosch recommends periodic checks and cleaning of both.
Tea or coffee stains
Tea and coffee discoloration is a different cleaning challenge from ordinary food soil. Bosch notes that liquid detergent can perform less well on bleachable stains; some detergent formulations include bleach to help break down certain stains. This does not make every pod the right choice for every machine: follow the manual and product directions.

White film or mineral-like residue
White film can be associated with hard water, detergent performance, or other washing conditions. Establish whether your water is hard before adding a hard-water treatment. Whirlpool says extremely hard water—15 grains per U.S. gallon or more—can make good cleaning results difficult and can damage the dishwasher. That threshold is Whirlpool’s guidance, not a diagnosis of your particular appliance.
Only some dishwashers have a water-softening system that uses dishwasher salt. Bosch advises checking whether the model supports it; adding salt without that feature is not a universal remedy. Consult the manual for the correct salt type, fill procedure, and settings.

Water spots after a cycle
Spots and drying are not the same as food-cleaning performance. Rinse aid helps water slide off dishes and may help with water spotting when used as directed. It will not clear a blocked spray arm or fix a mineral deposit already inside the machine.
A practical troubleshooting order
- Check the exact manual. Confirm permitted detergent formats and dosing, loading guidance, and whether the model has a softener or salt reservoir.
- Replace old or damp detergent. Use fresh automatic dishwasher detergent and follow its label. Whirlpool recommends cool, dry storage; Bosch also advises keeping detergent dry.
- Identify the residue. Food particles, tea or coffee staining, white film, and drying spots have different likely causes and should not all be treated by increasing detergent.
- For food left behind, inspect the filter and spray arms. Check for trapped debris or blocked openings and clean as directed in the manual.
- For buildup inside the empty dishwasher, distinguish grease and food residue from limescale. Bosch distinguishes dishwasher cleaner for grease or food residue from descaler for limescale. Use a product only as its label and appliance manual direct; Consumer Reports also provides dishwasher-cleaning guidance.
- If the problem persists, use model-specific troubleshooting or qualified service. A stronger detergent cannot be assumed to repair a worn or malfunctioning component.
How to get a fair detergent comparison
- Use fresh product stored sealed or otherwise protected from moisture, and dose consistently according to the directions.
- Keep loading and cycle choices consistent while you judge results; consult the manual for loading advice.
- Note what remains after washing: food soil, bleachable discoloration, mineral-looking film, or drying spots.
- Compare cleaning results and residue, then weigh cost per load and the convenience of a pack versus a dose-adjustable format.
Consumer Reports testing engineer Larry Ciufo said, “Generally, enzymes do help,” while cautioning that detergent performance is too complicated to attribute to one ingredient alone. A label’s ingredient list by itself is therefore not a reliable substitute for observed performance in your machine.
