Most projects need little beyond a bottle you already have; for any design that involves cutting, have an adult do the cutting or supervise it, and smooth or cover the cut edges before use.
Before you start: choose a bottle and work safely
Match the bottle to the job: a stable bottle bottom can stand as a pot or desk cup, while a bottle intended to hang needs a secure way to suspend it. Check whether the design needs drainage or controlled openings before cutting. Wash and dry bottles first, and use a cutting tool appropriate for the plastic thickness. NOAA advises that an adult cut bottles or supervise, since child-safe scissors may not cut through them: NOAA’s bottle-feeder activity. Smooth or cover every cut edge; this is a practical precaution, not a performance feature established by the project sources.
Bird-feeder projects
1. Simple bottle bird feeder
Materials: Clean plastic bottle, stick or dowel perch, hanging loop, birdseed and a suitable cutting tool. Make appropriately sized openings for the perch and feed, add the perch and hanging loop, then fill with seed. NOAA’s activity offers guidance on bottle choice and how birds reach the food. Keep feed openings fairly small to limit seed spilling, and have an adult cut or supervise the work: NOAA instructions.
2. Two-bottle gravity feeder
Materials: Two plastic bottles, a suitable cutting tool, hanging material and birdseed. Missouri’s Department of Conservation describes a two-bottle design with a seed tray; its tray has drainage holes to help keep seed dry. Follow the department’s construction and placement directions, including hanging the feeder within three feet of a window to reduce collision risk: Missouri Department of Conservation instructions.

Reuse with realistic expectations
Repurposing a bottle can give it another use; the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency includes reusing or repurposing items such as water bottles and containers among ways to reduce plastic waste. That general guidance does not quantify the environmental impact of any one craft: EPA guidance on reducing plastic waste. These projects also do not establish that a reused bottle is food-safe, durable for a particular period, or suitable for growing edible crops.
