Para una solución permanente, considera ventanas resistentes a impactos o un sistema de protección probado y aprobado para tu ubicación y abertura. No uses cinta adhesiva como refuerzo: puede hacer que el vidrio se rompa en fragmentos más grandes y peligrosos. Durante la tormenta, permanece dentro y lejos de ventanas y puertas si no has evacuado, y sigue las instrucciones de las autoridades locales.
Elige una protección que corresponda a tu vivienda
La protección de las ventanas debe estar colocada antes de la tormenta. FEMA y Ready.gov mencionan contraventanas y paneles de madera contrachapada como opciones para cubrir las aberturas; la elección depende de si buscas una medida de preparación o una mejora permanente. Ninguna opción protege por sí sola toda la casa ni sustituye una orden de evacuación.

Instala los paneles antes de que se acerque el huracán
Los paneles de contrachapado no son una garantía por el mero hecho de cubrir el vidrio: su eficacia depende de que estén correctamente instalados. Antes de elegir materiales o fijaciones, comprueba los requisitos del código local y las instrucciones fiables aplicables a cada abertura. No des por hecho que un tablero, espesor o método sirve para todas las ventanas.
Si planeas una solución permanente, consulta los requisitos de tu jurisdicción y pide asesoramiento profesional cuando corresponda. Una clasificación adecuada para una ventana no demuestra automáticamente que otras aberturas de la vivienda estén protegidas.

No uses cinta adhesiva para reforzar el vidrio
Ready.gov advierte: “Taping windows can create larger and deadlier shards of glass.” En otras palabras, poner cinta puede generar fragmentos de vidrio más grandes y peligrosos; no es una protección adecuada contra huracanes. La guía recomienda contraventanas o ventanas resistentes a impactos como alternativas más eficaces para evitar que el vidrio se rompa.

Si no has evacuado, refúgiate dentro y lejos de ventanas y puertas, y sigue las instrucciones de las autoridades locales. Tener una ventana cubierta o resistente a impactos no significa que sea seguro permanecer en un lugar sujeto a una orden de evacuación.
