Some household items need a collection or take-back route rather than the trash or curbside recycling. The right option depends on the item, its condition, local rules, and which programs accept it. In the U.S., household hazardous-waste management is regulated at the state and local level, so this is a practical list of common items that need special care—not a universal legal list. Check your local solid-waste or environmental agency for current instructions. (EPA household hazardous waste guidance; California CalRecycle guidance.)
What should I not throw in the trash?
Use the list below to identify items that commonly require a separate disposal route. A product’s label and your local waste agency’s instructions take precedence: what one community accepts may not be accepted in another.
1. Batteries, including lithium, button, rechargeable, and lead-acid
Do not put lithium single-use batteries, button or coin batteries, rechargeable batteries, or lead-acid batteries in household garbage or municipal recycling bins. Battery chemistry affects the safe collection route; use an appropriate battery collection program, participating retailer take-back, or local household hazardous-waste program. EPA advises separating batteries in bags or insulating terminals with nonconductive tape where applicable. If a lithium-ion battery is damaged, seek handling instructions from its manufacturer rather than treating it like an intact battery. (EPA battery guidance.)
2. Electronics such as phones, computers, and televisions
Do not put electronics in curbside recycling. Use an electronics collection site, a retailer or manufacturer take-back program, or an appropriate donation or recycling option. Delete personal information from phones and computers before handing them over. EPA reports that the U.S. generated 2.7 million tons of consumer electronics and recycled about 38.5 percent in 2018; those figures describe that year, not current recycling performance. (EPA electronics guidance.)

3. Leftover paint, especially oil-based paint and solvents
Do not assume leftover paint belongs in the trash or down a drain. Ask your local facility about paint recycling or household hazardous-waste collection; usable paint may also be suitable for donation. Rules differ by location and formulation, so check the label and local instructions. (EPA recycling guidance; EPA household hazardous waste guidance.)
4. Pesticides, herbicides, solvents, and hazardous cleaners
These products may be toxic, corrosive, flammable, or reactive. Do not pour them into a sink, storm sewer, or onto the ground, and do not assume ordinary trash is permitted. Keep them in their original labeled containers when safe, follow label disposal directions, and never mix leftover products. Contact your local hazardous-waste program for accepted drop-off options. (EPA household hazardous waste guidance.)

5. Used motor oil and oil filters
Take used motor oil to a collection or recycling channel rather than pouring it down the drain. EPA says many garages and auto-supply stores that sell motor oil also accept used oil for recycling; call first to confirm acceptance and instructions. EPA warns that the used motor oil from one oil change can contaminate one million gallons of fresh water if dumped down drains. (EPA recycling guidance.)
6. Fluorescent bulbs and other special light bulbs
Check local recycling options or ask a retailer whether it offers bulb recycling. Some bulbs contain hazardous materials, and disposal rules can vary by bulb type; do not assume every bulb follows the same route. (EPA recycling guidance; California CalRecycle guidance.)

7. Mercury thermometers, thermostats, barometers, and similar devices
Do not put mercury-containing thermometers or barometers in the trash. Contact your local waste facility for handling and drop-off instructions. California, for example, identifies mercury-added devices as special waste; that state guidance is not a nationwide rule. (EPA recycling guidance; California CalRecycle guidance.)
8. Loose needles, lancets, and other sharps
Never place loose needles or other sharps in trash or recycling. Put them immediately into a sharps container—an FDA-cleared container if possible—and follow local instructions for disposing of the sealed container. FDA’s instruction is direct: “DON’T throw loose needles and other sharps into the trash.” If choosing a container, verify FDA clearance for the specific item; clearance does not determine how your locality accepts a filled container. (FDA sharps guidance.)

9. Unused medicines
Medicine disposal is an important exception to a blanket “never in the trash” rule. FDA prefers take-back when available. If take-back is not available, almost all medicines—except those on the FDA flush list—can go in household trash after you mix them with an undesirable substance, such as used coffee grounds or dirt, and seal the mixture in a container or bag. Flush only medicines on FDA’s list when take-back is not readily available, and follow the product label and FDA instructions. (FDA medicine disposal guidance.)
10. Nonempty hazardous aerosol cans, antifreeze, solvents, and compressed gas cylinders
Do not treat these as ordinary empty packaging. EPA includes unemptied aerosol cans and antifreeze among household hazardous-waste examples. California’s guidance also identifies nonempty hazardous aerosol cans and compressed gas cylinders for special handling. Because local acceptance and handling directions govern, check with your waste agency before moving or disposing of them. (EPA recycling guidance; California CalRecycle guidance.)

How to choose a safe disposal route
- Read the label. Follow the product’s disposal directions and keep it in its original labeled container when safe. Do not combine leftovers; mixing hazardous products can create dangerous reactions. (EPA household hazardous waste guidance.)
- Check your local agency’s instructions. Ask your city, county, or regional solid-waste or environmental agency what it accepts, where to take it, and whether it requires advance arrangements. EPA’s guidance is: “Check with your local environmental, health or solid waste agency for more information on HHW management options in your area.” (EPA household hazardous waste guidance.)
- Use the item-specific route. Look for battery, electronics, paint, oil, bulb, medicine, or sharps take-back programs as applicable. Call a retailer or collection site before traveling; participation and accepted materials can vary.
- Do not improvise with damaged or uncertain items. For a damaged lithium-ion battery, get manufacturer-specific handling advice. For other products, ask the local waste agency how to store and transport them safely rather than opening, mixing, or pouring them out.
Why “never” depends on where you live
There is no single nationwide list that gives every household item identical disposal rules. EPA notes that household hazardous-waste management is handled at the state and local level; state lists such as California’s illustrate local requirements rather than establish federal rules for everyone. Your local program determines what it accepts and the route it wants residents to use. (EPA household hazardous waste guidance; California CalRecycle guidance.)
