No single tile and grout cleaner is established as best for every surface and stain. Match the formula to the job—embedded grout dirt, soap scum, mold or mildew, hard-water deposits, or routine upkeep—and check that the product is approved for your tile and grout. The results below are findings reported by HGTV and Bob Vila, not tests conducted by bettesworthconstruction.com.
How to choose a tile and grout cleaner
Start with two checks: what you are trying to remove and what the surface is made of. A cleaner that worked on soap scum on ceramic tile may not be suitable for natural stone, colored grout, marble, or a coated surface. Product-label compatibility is different from a reviewer’s test result: follow the current label for your exact product and surface.
- Embedded dirt in grout: Consider a grout-focused cleaner. Some require a dwell period and brushing; do not assume all formulas work the same way.
- Soap scum or general bathroom soil: A bathroom or tile cleaner may be a better match, subject to the label’s surface restrictions.
- Mold or mildew: Look for a product specifically intended for that problem. A bleach-containing formula has distinct compatibility and handling limits.
- Hard-water spots or mineral deposits: Choose a cleaner whose label covers the deposit and surface. Do not assume that a product effective on soap scum will also remove limescale.
- Natural stone: Use only a formula whose current directions permit the specific stone. A stone-oriented cleaner may be gentler but can be less effective on severe buildup.
For any cleaner, read the directions for application, dwell time, rinsing, ventilation, and protective equipment. When directed, test an inconspicuous area first.
What the published tests found
The products below are candidates with reported use cases, not a single independently verified ranking. Their performance comes from the named reviewers’ tests and should not be treated as a guarantee on another bathroom, stain, or material.

| Cleaner | Reported fit and test finding | Important limits |
|---|---|---|
| Black Diamond Ultimate Grout Cleaner | HGTV describes a spray without a bleaching agent and reports brightening in its test. Bob Vila describes a three-minute dwell followed by grout-brush scrubbing, with good results on dirt and soap scum. | HGTV reports limits on heavy mold, mildew, calcium, and water spots. Bob Vila says it does not remove mold or limescale. Use the three-minute dwell only for this product and according to its current label. |
| Soft Scrub With Bleach Cleaner Gel | HGTV names it its best gel and reports strong brightening on white grout, as well as effectiveness on mold and mildew. | HGTV warns against colored grout and fabric contact because the formula contains bleach. Check the current product label before use. |
| Granite Gold Grout Cleaner | HGTV identifies this grout cleaner as an option for natural stone. | HGTV reports it was less effective on tough stains and buildup than some alternatives. This is a grout-cleaner finding; do not assume it describes a different Granite Gold product. |
| Lysol Power Bathroom Foamer Cleaner | Bob Vila named it best overall in its shower-tile test and reports good performance on limescale and soap scum on compatible nonporous surfaces. | Bob Vila notes a strong odor. Check the label for surface compatibility and follow its ventilation directions. |
| Clorox Plus Tilex Mold & Mildew Remover | Bob Vila selected it for mold and mildew and identifies bleach as an active ingredient. | Follow the product’s listed surface restrictions. Bob Vila recommends ventilation and care for this bleach-containing cleaner. |
| CLR Brilliant Bath Foaming Cleaner | Bob Vila selected it for hard-water spots and reports success on deposits and soap scum in its test. | The review lists restrictions including colored grout and natural stone. Verify the exact package directions before use. |
| Better Life Tub and Tile Cleaner | Bob Vila describes it as an option for routine cleaning or light buildup. | Bob Vila reports lower effectiveness on moderate or severe soap scum and hard-water deposits than stronger alternatives. Its review says it is not suitable for marble, granite, and other natural stone. |
| Granite Gold Shower Cleaner | Bob Vila describes this separate product as suitable for several stone materials and better suited to routine or light buildup than severe buildup. | Do not treat this as the same formulation as Granite Gold Grout Cleaner. Check the exact product label for permitted materials. |
How much weight to give the test results
HGTV’s grout-cleaner and brush testing
HGTV’s search-result excerpt says its editors researched grout cleaners, read customer reviews, then tested eight cleaners plus one DIY solution and 11 brushes. Three editors used products in bathrooms, kitchens, and entryways on natural stone, ceramic and porcelain tile, and white and colored grout. They followed manufacturer instructions and considered cleaning results, smell, protective gear, and ease or messiness. The page could not be opened, so these method details and product findings are supported by the excerpt rather than a full-page inspection.
Bob Vila’s shower-tile testing
Bob Vila reports researching 15 shower-tile cleaners and testing seven for three weeks on a ceramic-tile shower with dark gray grout and a plastic-tile shower with white grout. The method included dried soap-and-water mixture to mimic soap scum, plus tests of applicable products on mold, hard-water spots, and grout. Its rubric covered ease of use, effectiveness, scent, and value. Bob Vila’s figures for this review are seven products tested, 5.3 testing hours, 11 tests performed, and a $10.22 average price; all are specific to that 2024 review, not current market statistics or current product prices.

Yahoo’s excerpt-level report
A Yahoo search-result excerpt describes an author testing 12 cleaners against dried mud and toothpaste on shower walls and floors. The page returned a rate-limit response, so that method is available only as excerpt-level reporting. It does not establish a result for the products in the comparison above.
Using a cleaner without damaging tile or grout
- Identify the material and stain. Determine whether the surface is ceramic, porcelain, natural stone, plastic, colored or white grout, or another finish, and whether the soil is dirt, soap scum, mold, or mineral deposit.
- Read the exact product label. Confirm that the cleaner permits your material and stain. Pay special attention to exclusions for natural stone, marble, colored grout, and sealed or coated surfaces.
- Prepare the area as directed. Ventilate when the label or product guidance calls for it, and use the protective equipment specified. Do not combine cleaners, especially bleach-containing products with other cleaners.
- Apply and wait only as directed. Follow the product’s application and dwell-time instructions. The three-minute dwell reported for Black Diamond Ultimate Grout Cleaner is product-specific, not a general rule for grout cleaners.
- Scrub only when appropriate. If the directions and task call for scrubbing, a grout brush can help target grout lines. HGTV reports testing 11 brushes, and Bob Vila describes using a grout brush; neither finding means every cleaner requires a special brush.
- Rinse or wipe as directed. Follow the cleaner’s instructions for removing residue and for any additional steps. If the surface reacts unexpectedly, stop and follow the product guidance rather than switching immediately to another cleaner.
Why these cleaners are not interchangeable
Review results depend on the test surface, stain, and method. Bob Vila’s shower tests, for example, used particular ceramic and plastic shower surfaces and specific simulated or existing soils; they do not establish universal results for every tile installation. HGTV’s reported testing covered more settings and materials, but its excerpt still does not substitute for the current product label. Choose by task and compatibility first, then treat a reviewer’s performance result as a useful comparison—not a promise.
