Verdict: Innovia’s countertop touchless paper towel dispenser makes dispensing hands-free and retracts unused towel, but it is a tall appliance that claims a permanent place on the counter. Its appeal depends on whether that convenience is worth the footprint; if clearing the counter is the priority, consider Innovia’s under-cabinet model and account for mounting and cabinet clearance.
How much counter space does it need?
Innovia’s FAQ, accessed in 2026, lists the countertop dispenser at 7.5 inches wide × 10 inches deep × 16 inches high. Measure the usable counter area and the vertical space beneath any cabinets before choosing a location. The height is particularly important on a crowded counter or beneath low cabinets; these dimensions describe the product, not a tested clutter rating.
For comparison, the same FAQ lists Innovia’s under-cabinet model at 14.1 inches wide × 10 inches deep × 7.5 inches high. It shifts the dispenser off the work surface, but requires mounting beneath a cabinet. Innovia’s installation guidance describes using a mounting template and screws, so check cabinet clearance and whether mounting is practical before selecting it.

What does hands-free dispensing involve?
The setup requires a towel tail to remain exposed. Innovia’s FAQ says that without it, the internal sensor may interpret the dispenser as empty. Once the compartment is closed, the machine retracts the exposed towel. On the first use, wave a hand at the sensor and tear the dispensed towel at the perforation that gives you the length you want; the dispenser then remembers the amount retracted and repeats that length.

For the countertop unit, Innovia’s FAQ says holding a hand near the sensor lets you dispense two additional sections. The reach is listed as 2–3 inches, and Innovia says ordinary walking past the unit or opening a cabinet door should not trigger it. Those are manufacturer statements, not independent test findings.
Which paper towels fit?
In answer to “What paper towels can be used with the dispenser?”, Innovia says standard perforated grocery-store rolls generally work. Its FAQ cautions that rolls larger than 6.5 inches in diameter may not fit initially. If a roll feeds poorly, Innovia suggests rounding out a compressed roll or reversing its orientation.

There is a specific exception: answering “Why aren’t my Viva® paper towels working in the dispenser?”, Innovia says Viva sheets can cling together and may not work well with the dispenser. Treat these as the manufacturer’s compatibility guidance rather than independently verified results; if you rely on a particular brand, confirm its roll dimensions and consider whether you are willing to switch.
What if it keeps retracting or stops feeding?
- The dispenser appears empty after loading: Leave a small section of towel hanging out when you close the compartment so the sensor can detect it.
- The roll will not feed smoothly: Check whether it is larger than 6.5 inches in diameter, then try rounding out a squashed roll or reversing its orientation, as Innovia recommends.
- It continues retracting after a towel has been pulled: Innovia says dust blocking the internal sensor lens may be responsible, and describes this as rare. Its guidance is to unplug the unit if connected, open the compartment, and clear debris with compressed air.
Which model makes more sense for a kitchen project?
Think of the choice as a space-planning decision, not simply a choice between two dispenser styles. The countertop model avoids a mounting step and can be placed where power and access work for you, but its 16-inch height and 10-inch depth may compete with other counter uses. The under-cabinet version preserves counter space, but adds installation, cabinet-clearance, and placement considerations. Innovia’s 2019 release described the countertop model as portable and the under-cabinet model as a way to free counter space; those are the company’s descriptions.

- Choose countertop placement if you have room for the published dimensions and value the ability to place the unit without mounting it.
- Consider the under-cabinet model if keeping the work surface clear matters more and your cabinet can accommodate the installation.
- Before buying either model, check your available power access and the towel roll dimensions and brand you expect to use.
