A useful starting point is to look for the exact product in the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Safer Choice database, then confirm that its label matches your cleaning task and surface. EPA’s search includes an Amazon Basics all-purpose cleaner, but lists it in the Business sector, so verify the live listing and intended use before treating it as a household recommendation.
How to tell whether a cleaner has meaningful environmental credentials
Terms such as “green,” “natural,” “eco safe” and “environmentally friendly” do not, by themselves, establish how a product was assessed. The EPA cautions consumers about vague or generic environmental claims and directs shoppers to its Safer Choice and Design for the Environment (DfE) product searches. EPA guidance on identifying greener cleaning products explains the distinction.
Safer Choice is a voluntary EPA program with product-level criteria. EPA reviews every chemical ingredient, regardless of concentration, and assesses ingredients within functional classes such as surfactants, solvents and chelating agents. Its standard also considers performance, packaging, pH and volatile organic compound (VOC) requirements. Qualifying products must meet category-specific performance standards; the label is evidence of meeting a defined standard, not a promise of zero risk or a universal ranking. Certification applies to the specific product record, not automatically to every item from a brand. Search the exact product name in EPA’s Safer Choice product database. The database can show multiple entries for a product listed across use sectors or types, so its entry count is not the number of distinct certified products. EPA’s program overview says nearly 2,000 products currently qualify to carry the label; the product-search page showed 2,091 entries when last updated September 22, 2026. These figures describe different things.

EPA says Safer Choice partners must disclose all ingredients on the product or on an easy-access manufacturer website. Check that disclosure for the exact formula you are considering, since formulas can change. “Natural” is not a substitute for this check: EPA notes that a chemical made from biological feedstock can be chemically identical to a petroleum-derived version and have the same potential impacts.
Compare products by the job they need to do
For a home, workshop or construction cleanup, first identify the task and surface. A laundry detergent is not a surface cleaner, and an all-purpose cleaner should only be used on surfaces its label permits. Then verify the exact product, its ingredient disclosure, scent and package format.

- Task and surface: Use the label’s directions and restrictions; do not infer suitability from a broad category name.
- EPA verification: Check the exact item in Safer Choice. For antimicrobial products such as disinfectants and sanitizers, look for the EPA’s DfE program rather than treating a general-purpose cleaner as a disinfectant.
- Ingredients: Find the product’s complete ingredient disclosure on its label or manufacturer site.
- Fragrance: Note whether it is scented or fragrance-free. EPA has a separate Fragrance-Free Safer Choice designation; do not assume “unscented” means “fragrance-free.”
- Packaging: Compare bottle and refill formats, and read disposal directions. EPA considers packaging, but that alone does not settle the product’s overall environmental impact.
- Amazon listing: Confirm the exact title, seller, size, intended use, stock and price on the live listing. These details can change.
Products and formats to investigate
The examples below are leads, not a ranked shortlist: there is no comparative test evidence here to establish an overall winner. For Amazon purchases, confirm the current product page and seller rather than assuming a name appearing in a search means it is currently available for household use.

Why a refill or “natural” claim is not the whole answer
A refill can reduce the need to buy a full-size bottle repeatedly, but the actual material, disposal route and product-specific claims matter. A compostability claim that depends on industrial facilities does not mean the packaging is suitable for a home compost bin. Likewise, “plant-based,” “biodegradable” and “non-toxic” are not interchangeable with EPA certification and should not be treated as proof that a cleaner is harmless or environmentally preferable in every respect.

How to check an Amazon candidate
- Search by exact name. Compare the Amazon product title and label with the exact EPA database record; do not infer certification from a brand or a similar product.
- Match the intended job. Read the label for suitable surfaces, use directions and any restrictions before applying the product.
- Check disclosure and scent. Locate the ingredient list and confirm whether the formula is scented or carries EPA’s Fragrance-Free designation.
- Review package and disposal claims. Distinguish a refill format from a claim about recyclable or compostable materials, and check whether the local disposal route accepts them.
- Confirm the live listing. Verify seller, size, intended use, stock and price at the time of purchase. A database record does not establish current Amazon inventory.
