Is Pine Good Firewood? How to Burn Pine Safely and Effectively

Pine is quick-lighting, hot-burning firewood when dry, but its lower density means faster burns and more frequent reloading. Here is how to use it safely and check readiness.

Yes—pine can be good firewood when it is properly dry and burned in a suitable, well-maintained stove or fireplace. It lights readily and burns hot and fast, so it works especially well for kindling and quick heat. Because pine is less dense than many hardwoods, it generally provides less heat per log volume and needs more frequent reloading. The key is not to judge wood by species alone: moisture, airflow, appliance operation and chimney condition all affect how well it burns.

What pine is good for—and where it falls short

Pine’s quick ignition makes it useful for starting a fire. Oregon State University Extension describes ponderosa pine as “hot and fast” burning and notes that small amounts of pitchy pine can make good firestarter material. Pine performance varies by species and individual piece, so that description should not be treated as a guarantee for every pine log. Oregon State University Extension

Fast burning is also the trade-off: you may need to reload more often than with denser hardwood. At equal moisture content, wood produces about the same heat pound-for-pound, but a heavier log of the same size contains more wood and therefore more heat. University of Georgia Cooperative Extension

How much heat does pine provide?

Heat-per-cord figures depend on the species and the condition of the wood. Oklahoma State University Extension’s dry-wood table lists shortleaf pine at 22 million Btu per cord and loblolly pine at 20.0–22.0 million Btu per cord. These are values for those named species, not a universal rating for pine. Oklahoma State University Extension, 2024

For a practical comparison, consider both how much heat fits in a log or cord and how quickly the wood burns. A smaller, less-dense log can deliver less heat by volume even if the wood itself is dry and burning properly.

Does pine cause more creosote?

Not automatically. Creosote is combustible residue from smoke that condenses on cooler chimney surfaces. Wet or unseasoned wood, restricted airflow, a cool flue and overloading the firebox can all contribute to buildup. U.S. Environmental Protection Agency

General Tools MMD4E Moisture Meter for Wood, Walls & Water Leak Detection
  • HUMIDITY SENSOR: Our handy meter tool can quickly determine what level of remediation is needed to keep your family safe from black mold. High levels of dampness that go untreated are the leading cause of harmful fungus growth in the home.
  • WATER LEAK DETECTOR: Finding the moisture content in your wood or drywall is the first step in early prevention. Continuously check and test suspicious water stains around the house so you can determine whether the area is wet or has already dried. Low, medium and high moisture tones and on-screen icons, Reading HOLD button
  • MOISTURE READER: The mold test features large 0.3" high digits in a backlit LCD for quick and easy detecting. Our mildew scanner includes extra 8mm stainless steel pins, a protective cap that doubles as a calibration checker, and a “9V” battery.
  • MOLD TESTER: For an accurate test read, stick the stainless steel pins into the surface of what you're measuring. The gauge has a broad range of 5 - 50% for wood and 1.5 - 33% for building materials such as concrete and drywall.

Extension guidance is qualified rather than absolute about pine pitch: the University of Georgia says resin alone has not been shown to cause more creosote than hardwood, while Oregon State advises that burning a lot of pitchy ponderosa pine may mean more frequent stovepipe cleaning. If you burn substantial amounts of pitchy pine, keep a close eye on the stove pipe and chimney and follow your appliance manufacturer’s maintenance guidance. How to tell whether pine is ready to burn

Use a moisture meter on the freshly split face of a log, not its outside surface. The EPA says wood burns most efficiently at 15–20% moisture; aim for 20% or less. U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, “Test Your Wood with a Moisture Meter,” 2020

RDINSCOS Replaceable Pins Moisture Meter
  • FIND HIDDEN WALL MOISTURE EARLY — Check suspicious drywall and building surfaces after a leak, water stain, or other moisture concern. Detect abnormal moisture before a small issue develops into more extensive damage and costly repairs
  • CHECK BEFORE YOU REPAIR — Don't rely on a wall looking or feeling dry. Use the moisture meter to check questionable areas before painting, repairing, or covering the surface, helping you make decisions based on actual moisture readings.
  • CHECK FIREWOOD BEFORE YOU BURN — Test firewood before placing it in your fireplace or wood stove. Knowing the moisture level of your firewood helps you choose wood that is ready for burning and avoid relying on appearance alone.
  • PIN-TYPE TESTING FOR DIRECT MEASUREMENTS — The contact pins penetrate the material to measure moisture inside wood and building materials. This makes it useful for checking areas where surface conditions may not tell the whole story.
  • ONE TOOL FOR TWO IMPORTANT HOME CHECKS — Keep it ready for two practical jobs: checking walls for hidden moisture and checking firewood before burning. A simple way to make informed decisions before a moisture problem becomes expensive or wood goes into the fireplace.

Do not rely on a fixed seasoning period as proof that the wood is dry. EPA’s broad guidance is to allow softwood at least six months, but weather, log size and storage conditions change drying time. Measure the wood before burning it. U.S. Environmental Protection Agency

Dry and store it well

  • Split logs before seasoning so more surface is exposed to air.
  • Store wood outdoors and off the ground.
  • Cover the top to shed rain while leaving the sides open for airflow.
  • Use moisture readings, rather than elapsed time or appearance alone, to decide when to burn it.

How to burn pine in a stove or fireplace

  1. Check that the wood is dry with a moisture meter on a newly split face.
  2. Build a small, hot fire and leave space between pieces so air can circulate.
  3. Operate the stove or fireplace as its manufacturer directs; do not overload the firebox or restrict air in a way that causes smoldering.
  4. Have the appliance and chimney inspected and maintained annually, as the EPA recommends.

Persistent smoke can point to wet fuel, inadequate air or an appliance or chimney problem. Address the cause rather than assuming it is simply a property of pine. U.S. Environmental Protection Agency
