These six plants show why the details matter: “corpse flower” can mean two different species, and the eerie feature may be a seed pod or berry rather than the bloom itself.
1. Titan arum: the corpse flower that smells like rotting flesh
Amorphophallus titanum, native to Sumatra, Indonesia, is often called the corpse flower for the powerful carrion-like odor it produces when blooming. The smell helps attract flies and carrion beetles. The U.S. Botanic Garden says the plant’s enormous flowering structure generates heat, and its odor is strongest at night and into early morning. U.S. Botanic Garden
Despite its dramatic appearance, the structure is not one giant flower. It is an inflorescence—a cluster made up of many small flowers. The U.S. Botanic Garden reports that a bloom can reach up to 9 feet tall. Its flowering schedule is unpredictable: the underground corm must build up enough stored energy before the plant can bloom. When Kew’s titan arum opened in 2026, the garden reported that the open, odorous phase would last only 2–3 days. Kew
2. Rafflesia: the other corpse flower
Rafflesia arnoldii shares the common name “corpse flower” with titan arum, but it is a different species with a different kind of bloom. Kew describes it as the world’s largest individual flower, not an inflorescence. Its rotten-meat-like odor attracts flies and beetles. Kew

Rafflesia is a parasite on Tetrastigma vines. It has no leaves, stems or roots of its own, and is often confused with titan arum because the two plants share the same common name.
3. Black bat flower: a bloom with whiskers
The black bat flower, Tacca chantrieri, looks as if it has spread dark wings. Its flower is framed by long, whisker-like tendrils, giving it the alternative common name devil flower. Kew identifies it as a tropical rainforest plant and a relative of yams. Kew

4. Ghost plant: pale because it cannot photosynthesize
The ghost plant, also called ghost flower, is Monotropa uniflora. Its stark white appearance comes from a lack of chlorophyll, the pigment plants use to photosynthesize. Instead of making sugars from sunlight, it obtains sugars through mycorrhizal fungi associated with tree roots. It does not feed directly on a tree. Its single flower hangs downward, adding to its ghostly look. Kew
5. Snapdragon: the skull appears after the flower
The snapdragon, Antirrhinum majus, is not skull-shaped while it is flowering. The uncanny resemblance comes later: after the flower dies, its seed pod can look like a grinning skull. Kew

6. Doll’s eyes: unsettling berries, not flowers
Actaea pachypoda is known as Doll’s eyes for its white berries, each marked with a dark center. The contrast makes the fruit resemble the eyes of old-fashioned china dolls. The name refers to the berries, not the plant’s flowers. U.S. Forest Service
Do not handle or eat unfamiliar wild plants. The appearance or common name of a plant is not a guide to whether it is safe.
