Exterior window wreaths are one of the fastest ways to make a home look finished for the season, but the best installation method is not the same for every window. A double-hung wood window, a vinyl replacement window, a fixed picture window, a casement window, and a historic divided-light window all need different thinking.
For most homes, the safest no-damage approach is a ribbon captured by an operable sash, an outdoor-rated suction hook on clean smooth glass, or a light-duty stabilizer such as clear fishing line. Magnetic hangers can work well on single-pane glass, but they often disappoint on insulated double-pane windows or storm-window assemblies. Screw hooks can be reliable, but only when you are comfortable making small permanent holes in exterior trim and sealing them correctly.
On our job sites, we treat exterior wreaths like any other temporary exterior attachment: consider load, water, wind, surface material, and emergency access before hanging anything. A wreath that looks harmless in the driveway can slap against glass in a storm, pinch weatherstripping, stain painted trim, or block a bedroom egress window if it is installed carelessly.
Start With the Window, Not the Wreath
Before buying hangers, identify the window type and the surface you plan to use. This saves money and prevents most failures.

For a standard operable double-hung window, the cleanest method is often ribbon looped over the top of the wreath and captured inside the closed sash. For a fixed picture window, you usually need suction hooks, exterior anchors, or a fishing-line setup tied to a secure interior or exterior point. For single-pane glass, magnetic hooks may be an option. For insulated glass, storm windows, vinyl frames, and aluminum-clad trim, removable methods are usually safer than screws.
Wreath size should be based on the sash or visible glass area, not the full rough opening. For many residential windows, an 18-inch to 24-inch wreath looks proportional. Large feature windows may handle a 28-inch to 36-inch wreath, but the weight and wind load go up quickly. Thick fresh wreaths and pre-lit wreaths also sit farther off the glass, which makes them more likely to move in wind.
Best Hanging Methods by Window Type
The table below gives a practical starting point. Always test one window first for 24 to 48 hours before installing the full front elevation, especially on windy sides of the house.
| Window type | Best method | Typical hardware cost per window | Main caution |
|---|---|---|---|
| Double-hung wood or clad window | Ribbon captured by upper sash | $5-$15 | Window must still close, latch, and seal |
| Single-hung window | Ribbon through operable sash or suction hook | $5-$25 | Limited sash movement may restrict placement |
| Fixed picture window | Outdoor suction hook, adhesive hook, or trim anchor | $5-$25 | No operable sash for ribbon capture |
| Casement window | Suction hook or exterior trim method | $5-$25 | Do not interfere with crank operation or gasket seal |
| Single-pane glass | Magnetic wreath hanger or suction hook | $10-$25 | Confirm magnet strength before full installation |
| Double-pane or storm window | Ribbon, suction hook, or trim method | $5-$25 | Magnetic hooks may not hold through thick glass |
| Vinyl replacement window | Ribbon, suction hook, or fishing line | $5-$20 | Avoid screw penetrations into vinyl frames |
| Historic wood window | Reversible ribbon or fishing line first | $5-$20 | Protect old paint, fragile glazing, and original trim |
Ribbon Through an Operable Sash
This is usually our first choice for double-hung windows because it avoids exterior holes and can often be installed from inside the house. Use outdoor-rated ribbon, typically 1.5 inches to 2.5 inches wide, and cut every piece to the same length so the wreaths line up across the elevation.
Open the upper or lower sash enough to pass the ribbon through, loop the ribbon around the wreath frame, and secure the interior end with a knot, a small dowel, or a flat anchor that cannot pull through the sash gap. Close and lock the window. Then check the weatherstripping from inside. If the sash will not latch normally or you can see daylight, adjust the ribbon or use another method.
Do not force a window closed over bulky ribbon, wire, zip ties, or an electrical cord. A compressed gasket can create an air leak or water path, and a distorted sash lock can make the window harder to operate later.
Outdoor Suction Hooks
Suction hooks are useful for smooth glass and lighter wreaths. Retail ratings vary widely; common window wreath suction hooks are advertised around 10 to 22 pounds, but those ratings are static indoor-style numbers under ideal conditions. Outside, performance drops with dirty glass, cold temperatures, condensation, textured glass, UV-aged suction cups, wreath movement, and wind.
Clean the glass with a degreasing glass cleaner, dry it fully, and warm the suction cup with your hands before pressing it firmly into place. For exterior windows, we prefer a lighter, flatter-backed wreath and a second lower control point. A small clear suction cup or fishing line at the bottom can keep the wreath from banging against the glass.

Magnetic hangers are attractive because they avoid holes and adhesive. They work best on single-pane glass where the magnets are close enough to grip each other. On insulated double-pane windows, laminated glass, storm windows, or thick assemblies, the air space and extra glass can reduce holding power dramatically.
If you want to try magnets, test one wreath for 24 to 48 hours before buying a full set. Use a lighter wreath first. If the magnets slide when you tug lightly downward or when the wreath moves in wind, choose a different method.

Fishing Line to an Interior Anchor
Clear fishing line can be useful where you need a nearly invisible hanger. It can run over the top sash, through a small gap, or to an interior anchor depending on the window. Use enough strength for the load; 20-pound to 50-pound line is common for light seasonal decor, but the anchor and window seal matter as much as the line rating.
Keep knots away from weatherstripping and avoid any routing that saws against painted trim. Fishing line is thin, which makes it easy to overtighten. The goal is support and stabilization, not pulling the sash out of alignment.

Screw Hooks Into Exterior Trim
Small screw hooks can be reliable on painted wood trim, but they are a permanent attachment. They are not our first choice for vinyl windows, aluminum cladding, fiber-cement trim, or any trim where you do not understand the water-management layers behind the surface.
If screw hooks are acceptable, use stainless steel or exterior-rated coated hardware. Drill a proper pilot hole, set the hook in solid material, and seal the penetration with high-quality exterior sealant. Never drive a screw into the window frame itself unless the window manufacturer allows it. A misplaced screw can void warranties, create a leak path, or damage the unit.
How to Install Wreaths So They Look Even
The difference between a polished elevation and a messy one is measurement. Pick a reference point and repeat it on every window. For example, measure 8 inches down from the top sash rail to the top of the wreath, or align the center of every wreath with the center of the upper sash.
Use the same wreath diameter across matching windows. If the front elevation has two narrow windows and one large center window, it is fine to use 18-inch wreaths on the narrow units and a 28-inch wreath on the feature window, but keep the ribbon color, bow size, and hanging height consistent.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteFor a typical 6-window front elevation, expect the first window to take 20 to 30 minutes while you test the method and placement. After that, matching windows may take 5 to 10 minutes each from inside, or 10 to 20 minutes each if ladder work, screen removal, and exterior stabilization are involved.
Wind, Weather, and Surface Protection
Exterior wreaths move. That movement is what causes most scratching, staining, and hanger failure. Windy elevations need two control points: one primary hanger at the top and one discreet lower stabilizer. The lower stabilizer can be a clear suction cup, a short piece of fishing line, or a soft tie to a muntin or trim element where appropriate.
Fresh greenery is heavier when wet and may shed needles, sap, or moisture onto painted trim. If a fresh wreath touches the window or casing, add felt pads, clear bumpers, or a small protective backer at contact points. Artificial wreaths reduce mess, but pre-lit versions add battery weight and electrical planning.
Do not run extension cords through operable sash openings. Pinching a cord can damage insulation and prevent the window from sealing. Use battery-powered exterior-rated lights or a proper outdoor receptacle and outdoor-rated cord route that does not cross walkways or interfere with window operation.

Safety and Code Notes Homeowners Should Not Skip
Most exterior wreath hanging is a no-permit curb-appeal project. The bigger concerns are ladder safety, electrical safety, and emergency escape windows.
Bedroom egress windows and other emergency escape and rescue openings must remain usable. Do not install a wreath, ribbon, wire, hook, or lighting cord in a way that prevents the window from opening, reduces clear opening, blocks access, or delays escape. This matters most at bedrooms, basements, and sleeping areas.
Second-story work changes the risk profile. If you can install the wreath from inside using a sash method, that is usually preferable to climbing a ladder. If exterior access is required, check grade, wet pavement, landscaping, overhead service drops, and wind before placing a ladder. A 20-minute decorating task is not worth a fall.
For historic homes, reversible methods should come first. Old wood trim, brittle glazing compound, lead-era paint, and custom storm windows can be damaged by aggressive hooks or adhesives. If permanent hardware is being considered, inspect the trim condition and any local preservation restrictions before drilling.

For a DIY installation, hardware-only cost is usually about $5 to $25 per window. Suction cup hooks, ribbon, fishing line, adhesive hooks, and basic magnetic holders all fall into that range depending on quantity and quality. Current retail examples include simple suction hook packs around $5, multi-packs around $11 to $19, and magnetic holders commonly around $20 each.
Wreaths drive the real budget. Budget artificial wreaths can start around $10 to $30. Midrange exterior artificial wreaths are commonly $30 to $80. Premium, larger, or pre-lit outdoor wreaths can run $100 to $200 or more each.
| Project size | Budget DIY | Midrange DIY | Premium DIY | Typical pro labor |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Single window | $15-$55 | $40-$105 | $125-$225+ | Often subject to trip minimum |
| 6 first-floor windows | $120-$330 | $240-$630 | $750-$1,350+ | $150-$400 plus materials |
| 10 mixed-height windows | $200-$550 | $400-$1,050 | $1,250-$2,250+ | $400-$1,200+ plus materials |
Professional installation is usually priced as a small handyman job. National 2026 handyman rates commonly fall around $50 to $125 per hour, with many jobs subject to a trip charge or minimum. A simple first-floor 6-window installation may land around $150 to $400 in labor plus materials. A larger home with second-story access, steep grades, fragile historic windows, screen removal, custom hardware, or lighting can run $400 to $1,200 or more.
If you want the wreaths installed before Thanksgiving or early December, schedule early. Holiday-season demand tightens quickly, and small exterior jobs often cost more when crews are already booked.

When to DIY and When to Hire a Pro
DIY makes sense when the windows are first-floor or safely reachable from inside, the wreaths are light, the hanging method is removable, and you can test one setup before installing the rest. A homeowner with 6 to 10 standard double-hung windows can often finish the job in a half day using ribbon, suction cups, and basic measuring.
Hire a pro when the work requires second-story ladder placement, the home has steep grades or awkward landscaping, the wreaths are large or pre-lit, the windows are historic or fragile, or you want permanent hooks installed into exterior trim. A pro is also the better call when screens or storm panels need to be removed and stored without damage.

For construction-quality results, ask the installer how they plan to protect the window seals, whether they will use two control points on windy elevations, and whether removal is included. Removal matters. Wreaths left up too long can fade, trap moisture, stain trim, and leave suction cups brittle from UV exposure.
Removal and Storage Plan
The fastest installation next year starts with organized removal this year. Label each wreath by window location, such as “front left upper” or “dining room center.” Coil ribbon and fishing line separately so it does not tangle around wreath frames. Clean suction cups with mild soap and water, let them dry, and store them flat in a sealed bag so they stay pliable.
Inspect every contact point during removal. Look for rubbed paint, sap, water staining, loosened hooks, cracked suction cups, or compressed weatherstripping. Small issues are easy to fix in January. They become expensive when moisture works into trim for a full season.
Our Practical Recommendation
For most modern homes, start with the least invasive method that still controls movement. On operable double-hung windows, use matched ribbon through the sash and verify the lock and weather seal. On fixed windows, use outdoor-rated suction hooks only on clean smooth glass and add a lower stabilizer. Use magnetic hooks mainly on single-pane glass. Reserve screw hooks for sound wood trim where permanent holes are acceptable and can be sealed.
Keep wreaths light, proportion them to the sash, test one installation for 24 to 48 hours, and avoid anything that blocks emergency window operation. Done that way, exterior window wreaths are a low-cost curb-appeal upgrade that should leave the house exactly as sound as you found it.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best way to hang exterior window wreaths without damage?
For operable double-hung windows, ribbon captured by the sash is usually the best no-damage method. For fixed windows, use outdoor-rated suction hooks on clean smooth glass and add a lower stabilizer in windy locations.

Can magnetic wreath hangers work on double-pane windows?
Sometimes, but they are much less reliable on double-pane, insulated, laminated, or storm-window assemblies. Magnetic hangers work best on single-pane glass where the magnets are close together.
Are suction cups strong enough for outdoor wreaths?
They can be, especially for light 18-inch to 24-inch wreaths on clean smooth glass. Advertised ratings may be 10 to 22 pounds, but wind, cold, dirt, condensation, and wreath movement reduce real-world holding power.
How do you hang wreaths on second-story windows safely?
Use an interior sash-ribbon method whenever possible so you do not need a ladder. If exterior ladder work is required, hire a pro when grade, landscaping, weather, rooflines, or overhead service drops make access risky.
Can I screw hooks into exterior window trim?
Only if the trim is sound and you accept permanent holes. Use exterior-rated hardware, drill pilot holes, and seal penetrations. Avoid screwing into vinyl frames, aluminum cladding, or the window unit itself.
