“Third of a sun” means converting about one-third of the sunlight reaching a solar module into electricity. The phrase appeared in a 2012 report about Amonix concentrator photovoltaics (CPV), not an ordinary rooftop panel or a current efficiency record.
What did Amonix announce?
New Atlas reported on November 2, 2012, that Amonix announced a module-efficiency rating of 33.5%. The article also reported a separate peak of 34.2% during National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) testing in May 2012. New Atlas attributed to Amonix the characterization of that peak as a real-world module result and as the highest such result at the time. How does concentrator photovoltaics work?
Concentrator photovoltaics use optical components such as lenses or mirrors to focus direct sunlight onto solar cells. This differs from ordinary flat-plate rooftop PV, and the figures in the 2012 report should not be read as a specification for a standard residential panel.
CPV is also distinct from concentrated solar power (CSP). CPV focuses light onto photovoltaic cells to produce electricity directly. CSP gathers sunlight as heat and can use a heat engine to generate electricity.

Why cell and module efficiencies are not interchangeable
A cell is an individual electricity-generating component; a module combines cells with the other components needed to make a usable panel. Efficiency measured for a cell is therefore not the same as efficiency measured for the complete module.
A 2002 Spectrolab paper reports that three-junction solar cells for terrestrial concentrators achieved 34% efficiency, independently confirmed at NREL under illumination concentrated to 150–400 suns. That is a cell-level result under concentrated light—not evidence that a commercial module reached 34%. Spectrolab authors, “High-efficiency solar cells through bandgap control,” 2002

How to compare solar-efficiency claims
Before comparing a headline percentage with another solar result, check that both figures describe the same kind of measurement:
- Device: Is the figure for an individual cell or a complete module?
- Illumination: Was the device tested under one-sun illumination or concentrated sunlight? If concentrated, what concentration level was used?
- Test conditions: What spectrum and conditions applied to the measurement?
- Attribution: Was the result independently measured, or reported as a manufacturer’s claim?
These distinctions matter for the Amonix figures: the 33.5% number was an announced module rating, while the 34.2% figure was a peak reported from NREL testing and described by Amonix as a real-world module result. Neither the 2002 cell paper nor the 2012 news report establishes that the Amonix product remains available or that either number is the current record.
