For a flexible batch of coffee concentrate, WIRED’s May 2025 guide names the OXO Compact its overall pick. The right choice depends on whether you want concentrate or ready-to-drink coffee, how much you need, and how much filtering and cleanup you will tolerate. The guide’s rankings and tasting judgments are WIRED’s, not independent tests for this article; its prices reflect the guide’s publication period and may have changed.
How to choose a cold-brew maker
Start with the kind of coffee you want and the work you are willing to do. Cold brew is extracted with cool water over time; it is not the same as iced coffee or flash brew, which is brewed hot and then chilled.
Choose a brewing style
- Immersion: Coffee grounds steep in water, giving you flexibility to make concentrate and adjust the strength. You must separate the grounds, usually by draining or filtering.
- Filter-basket pitcher: Grounds sit in a removable basket, making serving and grounds removal straightforward. Basket size can constrain the coffee-to-water ratio, and a tightly packed or clogged basket may extract unevenly.
- Slow drip: Water drips through grounds over roughly six to 12 hours. WIRED describes this style as tending toward a brighter, lighter-bodied cup with more pronounced aromatics than immersion; it calls for more attention during brewing.
Match capacity to strength and usable output
A large vessel does not necessarily mean a large amount of finished coffee. Consider whether the brewer is designed for concentrate to dilute later or for ready-to-drink coffee, and compare the expected output with the container’s stated capacity. For a smaller concentrate batch, WIRED points to the OXO Compact; for larger batches, it suggests the full-size OXO or Toddy.
Think about filtration, cleanup, and storage
Fine particles left in the brew can continue extracting and affect flavor. Check whether a maker uses a reusable filter, accepts a compatible paper filter, or requires replacement pads or liners. Confirm accessory fit for the exact model. Also measure the stand, carafe, and any dispenser against your refrigerator shelf or counter space.

WIRED’s 2025 picks at a glance
WIRED’s May 2025 roundup identifies these models and uses. The labels below reflect that guide, not a new comparative test. Its source article contains the complete 11-item lineup and the guide’s product-by-product judgments.
| Maker | Role in WIRED’s guide | What to weigh |
|---|---|---|
| OXO Compact | Overall pick | WIRED presents it as a smaller-batch concentrate option. |
| Hario Mizudashi | Petite pitcher | A compact pitcher format favors simple grounds removal over the ratio flexibility of full immersion. |
| OXO Rapid Brewer | Fast brewing | A pressure-based approach trades the traditional long steep for more steps and may be sensitive to beans and grind. |
| Fellow Aiden | Hot-bloom/cool-water approach | Its method differs from a straightforward cool-water immersion; consult WIRED’s guide for its assessment. |
| OXO full-size Cold Brew Coffee Maker | Larger countertop maker | Its listed capacity is 40 oz; the manual estimates 24–28 oz of concentrate from its recipe. |
| Kinto Capsule | Ready-to-drink pitcher | Designed around a pitcher-style brew rather than a flexible concentrate batch. |
| Toddy Cold Brew System | Classic system | WIRED points to it as an option for larger batches. |
| Secura French Press | French-press-style option | Consider how its grounds separation and cleaning fit your routine. |
| KitchenAid Cold Brew Coffee Maker | Dispenser | Account for its footprint and the space needed to store and serve from the dispenser. |
The guide also covers other picks and accessories. Because the source information summarized here does not establish those remaining products by name, this table does not invent the other two entries or imply that it reproduces the full ranking.

Recipes and output: what the manufacturer instructions say
Full-size OXO
OXO lists a 40 oz capacity for its full-size maker, with a borosilicate glass carafe, reusable stainless-steel mesh filter, Rainmaker water distributor, and a stopper for sealing and portioning concentrate. These are manufacturer-listed features, not comparative performance findings. OXO describes its concentrate as low-acid; that is a product claim, not a medical benefit.
OXO’s manual recommends 10 oz (284 g) of coarsely ground coffee and 40 oz (1,200 ml) of water, steeped for 12–24 hours, for an estimated 24–28 oz (700–800 ml) of concentrate. Its suggested serving is two ounces of concentrate diluted with four to six ounces of water or milk, with ice if desired. The manual says the carafe may be refrigerated for up to two weeks; treat that as OXO’s storage instruction, not a universal safety guarantee for every brew or handling condition.

Takeya pitchers
Takeya’s official recipes are model-specific: its two-quart recipe calls for approximately 170 g of coarse coffee, while its one-quart recipe calls for approximately 106 g. Both direct users to shake the pitcher to wet the grounds and refrigerate for 24 hours. Do not treat those amounts as a universal cold-brew ratio.
Traditional immersion as a starting point
For a traditional immersion brewer, WIRED’s general preparation guidance suggests a coffee-to-water ratio of 1:4 or 1:5 and about 24 hours in the refrigerator, followed by tasting and adjustment. That is a starting point, not a replacement for the chosen maker’s recipe; manufacturers’ instructions differ.

What WIRED’s comparisons can—and cannot—tell you
WIRED says it compared makers under similar conditions, used blind tasting when possible, and compared results with packaged coffee made from the same or similar beans. Its guide says it began with each maker’s packaging recipe, then assessed drinking-strength coffee at a 12:1 water-to-coffee ratio and concentrate at 5:1. It generally tried room-temperature brews around 16 hours and refrigerated brews for 24 hours, sometimes sampling earlier or steeping longer when needed. Its criteria included coffee quality, ease of use and cleaning, flexibility, design, and footprint.
Those protocol details explain the context for the guide’s judgments; they are not universal brewing instructions. WIRED says coffee quality mattered most: “But in the end, the results mattered most: If a device can’t make good coffee, it doesn’t matter if it’s pretty.” The statement is about the guide’s own testing criteria.

Caffeine depends on the recipe
A cold-brew label alone does not establish how much caffeine is in a serving. Concentration, coffee-to-water ratio, steep time, and dilution all affect the result, so cold brew is not inherently guaranteed to contain more caffeine than hot coffee.
