Major Microwave Brands: What Reliability and Satisfaction Rankings Actually Show

There is no universal worst-to-best microwave brand ranking. The latest satisfaction results and owner-survey reliability findings measure different things and cover different formats.

There is no evidence-based, universal worst-to-best ranking of major microwave brands. The latest available results point in different directions because they measure different things: J.D. Power’s 2026 satisfaction study puts Samsung first among over-the-range microwaves, while Consumer Reports’ 2025 owner survey highlights specific problem patterns for Whirlpool and Breville. Those findings can inform a purchase, but neither establishes which brand is best across every format and model.

Why there is no single worst-to-best ranking

A brand can receive strong customer-satisfaction scores while some owners report recurring problems. Satisfaction and reliability are related, but they are not interchangeable: one measures how customers rate their experience, while the other concerns reported problems over time. Cooking performance, value, installation fit, and ease of use are separate considerations.

The available sources also cover different products and periods. J.D. Power’s microwave rankings are specifically for over-the-range models. Consumer Reports’ reliability reporting covers both countertop and over-the-range microwaves. Neither source supports putting every major brand into a complete, universal order.

Over-the-range satisfaction: the 2026 ranking

In its 2026 U.S. Appliance Satisfaction Study, J.D. Power ranked these brands highest for over-the-range microwave satisfaction:

This is a dated satisfaction ranking, not a reliability or cooking-performance test. The 2026 study covered 28,411 evaluations across appliance categories and was fielded from April 2025 through April 2026. J.D. Power’s 2026 study release provides the study context.

The leader changed in the 2025 study

J.D. Power’s prior U.S. Appliance Satisfaction Study ranked Frigidaire first for over-the-range microwave satisfaction, followed by Whirlpool and Samsung:

The 2025 study covered 15,884 evaluations across appliance categories and was fielded from July 2024 through April 2025. The change in leader is a reason to treat satisfaction results as year-specific, rather than as a permanent brand hierarchy. J.D. Power’s 2025 study release reports that year’s results.

What Consumer Reports’ reliability findings say

Consumer Reports’ microwave reliability article, updated October 24, 2025, draws on member experiences with new purchases made from 2015 through 2025. Its survey base included 37,845 countertop microwaves and 36,707 over-the-range microwaves. The report identifies elevated rates of certain problems for two brands:

Countertop and over-the-range models need separate consideration

A countertop microwave sits on a work surface and can suit kitchens without a dedicated microwave installation. An over-the-range unit is installed above a cooking range, so the purchase involves both appliance selection and installation compatibility. J.D. Power’s cited rankings apply only to the latter format; they should not be treated as a ranking of countertop models.

Before choosing an over-the-range model, check the exact product’s dimensions, mounting and venting requirements, and installation instructions against the kitchen. The available evidence does not establish one set of dimensions that fits all models. Consumer Reports’ Microwave Buying Guide discusses the two formats as well as model ratings for reliability and owner satisfaction.

How to use brand rankings when choosing a microwave

  1. Choose the format first. Decide whether your kitchen calls for a countertop or over-the-range unit; the cited J.D. Power scores cover only over-the-range microwaves.
  2. Check exact-model evidence. A brand-level result does not establish how a particular model cooks, how its controls work, or how owners rate it. Compare model-level ratings and features where available.
  3. Verify the fit. For an over-the-range microwave, confirm dimensions, venting, and installation requirements using the exact model documentation.
  4. Match controls and features to your needs. Consider whether the interface and functions suit the people who will use the appliance; a high brand score cannot determine that for you.
  5. Read each statistic in context. Treat survey-reported problems as comparative signals and satisfaction scores as customer ratings—not as interchangeable proof of reliability.
