There is no generally approved modification for making a room air conditioner cool below its 60°F minimum setpoint. The minimum setting is model-specific, and bypassing controls or moving a temperature sensor is not a safe general solution. First determine whether you mean a setpoint below 60°F, an actual room temperature below 60°F, or operation when the outdoor air is cold; those are different conditions.
What “below 60°F” can mean
A setpoint below 60°F
The setpoint is the temperature the unit is instructed to aim for, not a guarantee of the room’s actual temperature. Frigidaire lists a 60°F–90°F cooling adjustment range for its room air conditioner controls and notes that settings vary by model. Its support guidance explains that the setpoint is the unit’s desired temperature, not the actual room temperature. Check the use-and-care manual for the exact model rather than assuming every unit has the same lower limit.
An actual room temperature below 60°F
A room may become colder than the displayed setpoint because of conditions such as temperature differences within the room or the way the unit senses temperature. The setpoint floor and the lowest temperature a room might reach are not interchangeable specifications. A low displayed setpoint also does not establish that the unit can safely or effectively maintain that temperature.
Outdoor air below 60°F
Outdoor temperature is a separate operating condition. GE Appliances says outdoor temperatures at or below 70°F can limit a room air conditioner’s cooling capacity and may cause frost or freezing on the indoor coil. That guidance concerns outdoor conditions, not a 60°F indoor setpoint.

Why bypassing the controls is not a safe general fix
A control limit may be part of how a particular model is designed to operate. The available manufacturer guidance does not establish a universal wiring change, replacement thermostat, or external controller that safely lowers every room AC’s setpoint. A generic bypass could interfere with model-specific controls or protections, and no generally compatible manufacturer-approved retrofit is established here.
Nor does the guidance show that every unit will be damaged whenever it runs below 60°F. The substantiated concern is that cold operating conditions can reduce performance and may lead to indoor-coil icing; the outcome depends on the unit and conditions. Do not treat sensor repositioning or control bypass instructions found for another model as approval for yours.

What to check before changing anything
- Identify the unit. Record the complete model number from its rating label. A brand name alone is not enough to establish the setpoint range or cold-weather behavior.
- Read the model’s use-and-care manual. Find the cooling temperature range, outdoor operating guidance, and any instructions for frost or a coil that is not cooling. Frigidaire specifically directs owners to the manual because settings vary by model.
- Separate the two temperatures. Check whether the concern is the lowest selectable indoor setpoint or the outdoor temperature while cooling. Do not apply a manufacturer’s outdoor-temperature threshold to a different brand or model as if it were universal.
- Ask the manufacturer or a qualified HVAC technician before modifying controls. Provide the exact model and describe the temperatures and symptoms. Have the unit diagnosed before any control alteration is considered.
What to do if the coil appears frozen
Follow the instructions in the manual for the exact model. One reproduced excerpt from the Frigidaire FAH08ER1T manual says cooling may not occur while the room temperature is below 60°F and recommends FAN ONLY to defrost the coil. That is a model-specific example, not a universal instruction; confirm it in the owner’s manual for your unit before relying on it.
GE’s separate cold-temperature guidance says not to use a room air conditioner when outdoor temperature is below 50°F, citing limited cooling capacity and possible indoor-coil icing; it also notes that the compressor may not start in some cases. This is GE guidance, not a universal minimum for every room air conditioner. Consult your own manual for the applicable operating conditions.
