Fusion, Muir, Cherokee, Adriana, and Salvius are five lettuce varieties worth considering for summer growing. They are a practical shortlist, not a universal ranking: Fusion, Muir, and Cherokee are Summer Crisp or Batavian options, while Adriana is a butterhead and Salvius is a romaine. Heat tolerance is relative. It can help delay bolting and reduce tipburn, but it does not make lettuce heat-proof.
What heat tolerance means for summer lettuce
For lettuce, useful heat tolerance means better ability to resist bolting—the premature flowering that makes leaves bitter or tough—and tipburn, a browning of leaf edges. Johnny’s Selected Seeds describes heat-tolerant lettuce in terms of retaining desirable head shape while improving tolerance to these problems: lettuce growing guidance.
Even heat-tolerant varieties have upper temperature limits, as Johnny’s cautions in the same guidance. Its summer designation refers to performance in a summer growing slot; results can differ during spring-to-summer or summer-to-fall transitions. A cultivar’s fit also depends on local latitude, microclimate, and growing practices.
Five heat-tolerant lettuce varieties to consider
Johnny’s identifies the first three as summer-performing Summer Crisp or Batavian choices and includes Adriana and Salvius among its heat-tolerant full-size options. The available guidance does not establish a head-to-head ranking among them.

How to choose among the five
Start with the lettuce type you want to eat, then check how the cultivar fits your local planting window and growing conditions. Heat tolerance alone does not show that one variety is best on every measure.

- For Summer Crisp or Batavian types: Compare Fusion, Muir, and Cherokee. Minnesota Extension says Batavia and summer crisp lettuces are bred for warm summer temperatures and slow bolting: University of Minnesota Extension’s lettuce guidance.
- For a butterhead: Consider Adriana.
- For a romaine: Consider Salvius, while checking whether it suits your local season.
- For regional fit: Look beyond the variety name to bolting and tipburn resistance, disease package, growth speed, intended planting slot, and production method. Johnny’s Southeast guidance, for example, emphasizes heat tolerance alongside disease resistance and identifies Batavia as a potentially reliable type in many Southeast locations; it names Blue Rock and Sunland as region-specific summer romaine options. These recommendations are not proof that any cultivar performs the same everywhere: Johnny’s Southeast lettuce guidance.
Growing practices still matter
Variety is only one part of managing summer heat. Johnny’s hot-weather advice includes irrigation, shade cloth, and sowing in cooler locations. In regions with intense heat, a different planting window—or avoiding outdoor production during the hottest stretch—may be more practical than relying on a heat-tolerant cultivar.
Minnesota Extension suggests succession planting about every ten days for a continuing harvest and changing varieties as conditions shift through the season. Treat that interval as guidance to adapt to your climate and production system, rather than a schedule that suits every garden.

Set realistic expectations
The five varieties are supported by supplier recommendations, with Minnesota Extension providing broader context on summer lettuce types and selection criteria. The cited guidance does not establish a universal temperature cutoff or comparable independent trial results for these five cultivars, so it cannot support a numerical heat threshold or a performance ranking. Seed catalog availability can change; check the current listing for the variety you plan to grow.
