Creating Beautiful Borders: How to Edge Your Flower Beds

Mark a mowable outline, cut it with a sharp spade or half-moon turf cutter, and choose bare soil or edging material based on upkeep and site needs.

A neat flower-bed edge starts with a clear outline, not necessarily with purchased edging. Mark the line, cut it cleanly with a sharp spade or half-moon turf cutter, then decide whether a simple cut edge or an installed border best suits your garden, mowing routine and maintenance preferences.

Plan the border before you cut

Edging creates a defined transition between a planted bed and lawn or groundcover. It can make the boundary look intentional and help keep mulch in place, but the result depends on the shape and the material you choose. Illinois Extension describes the effect as a “clean, neat line between planting areas and turf or groundcovers.”

Lay out the proposed line before digging. Use a garden hose or rope to adjust a curve, or a string line for a straight boundary. Check that the bed leaves room for plants to reach their mature size and that its shape will be practical to mow. The Royal Horticultural Society’s border guide recommends these layout tools and planning for plant growth.

Cut a clean edge

Mark and cut the line

  1. Set the outline with a hose or rope for curves, or a string line for a straight run.
  2. Cut along the mark with a sharp flat spade or a half-moon turf cutter. A half-moon cutter is optional; a sharp spade works too.
  3. Remove turf from the bed side of the cut and tidy the line. If you want a trench, K-State Research and Extension’s Johnson County guide recommends a V-shaped cut 4 to 6 inches deep and wide, angled toward the bed to make it harder for grass roots to cross. This is that guide’s recommendation, not a universal dimension for every soil, lawn or edging installation.

Leave the edge bare or add a border

A cut edge needs no hardscape purchase and is easy to change as a bed grows or its outline changes. It does need periodic attention: Illinois Extension says a hand-edged bed may need touching up once or twice a year, and the K-State guide gives a similar once-or-twice-during-the-growing-season interval. Recut when turf or plants begin crossing the boundary.

Known for its exceptional strength and flexibility, spring steel resists deformation and maintains its sharpness even under challenging conditions
  • Wide Footplate for Effortless Leverage: The garden edger features an 8-inch wide footplate that provides extra leverage, making it easy for users of all shoe sizes to apply pressure comfortably and effectively
  • Serrated Blade for Efficient Cutting: Featuring a high-quality serrated spring steel blade, this edging shovel offers superior cutting power compared to flat shovels. • Precision Curved & Straight Edging: Engineered for crisp straight lines and smooth curves, this edger lawn tool provides clean cuts along driveways, sidewalks, and flower beds. The sharp, reinforced blade digs small trenches for laying irrigation lines, drainage pipes, or low-voltage cables, while efficiently defining garden paths and borders
  • Quiet, Eco-Friendly, and All-Weather Control: This grass edger works effectively even in wet conditions where electric trimmers might struggle. It is quieter and more environmentally friendly compared to gas-powered trimmers, with no need for fuel or oil. The compact design of this edging tool makes it convenient for limited storage spaces

Choose an edging material that suits the site

Compare options by more than appearance. Consider initial cost, installation effort, how well the edge separates spreading turf, mowing access, upkeep, durability in local site conditions and how easily you may want to alter the bed. There is no universal price or lifespan comparison in the cited extension guidance, and no material removes all maintenance.

Option What it offers Trade-offs and upkeep
Cut or trenched edge No edging material to buy; clean, simple look; straightforward to reshape. Grass can creep back across the line, so periodic recutting is part of the upkeep. K-State’s 4-to-6-inch V-shaped trench is a specific guide recommendation, not a requirement for every site.
Brick or pavers Available in varied shapes and colors. Set flush with the ground, they can provide a mowing strip; K-State notes that interlocking pavers can fit tightly without mortar. Installation takes more work than cutting an edge. The top needs to be set at a suitable height for mowing, and the bed can be less convenient to reshape than a cut edge.
Stone Can create an informal or decorative boundary. Unmortared fieldstone or flagstone may leave gaps where turf can spread, making hand trimming necessary. Base and dimensions depend on the stone and installation; Illinois Extension’s specific suggestions should not be treated as universal specifications.
Wood Natural appearance; set flush, it can also serve as a mowing edge. Wood eventually rots. Illinois Extension cautions against old railroad ties coated with materials toxic to plants.
Metal Illinois Extension describes steel and aluminum as long-lasting options. Aluminum is easier to work than steel. Steel can be costly and difficult to install, and frost heaving is a concern. Aluminum’s silver color may look unnatural in some landscapes.
Plastic Common, inexpensive and initially easy to install. Illinois Extension cautions that it can be less durable, may look out of place and can be difficult to keep stable. The article notes that round-top products may be less prone to sinking than flat types; anchoring and installation matter.

For detailed material considerations, see Illinois Extension’s “Bed Edges” and the K-State Research and Extension Johnson County guide, “All About Edging”.

Match the edge to mowing and maintenance

  • Choose a simple cut edge if you want a low-cost, adjustable boundary and do not mind refreshing it during the growing season.
  • Consider flush brick, pavers or wood where a continuous surface beside the lawn would make mowing easier. Check the height and stability of the installation rather than assuming any border will eliminate trimming.
  • Be cautious with loose stone if keeping turf out with minimal hand work is a priority; gaps can allow grass to spread.
  • Weigh durability against installation constraints when considering metal or plastic. Frost, soil movement, anchoring and the effort required to install the material can affect how stable the edge remains.
  • Keep the overall landscape in view. As K-State’s guide puts it, a “smart” edging should harmonize with the landscape, suit the budget and help reduce maintenance.

Whatever you choose, make the boundary easy to reach for mowing and upkeep. Recut a bare edge as it blurs; inspect an installed one for movement, gaps or turf crossing, and address those issues before they spread along the bed.
