LiftMaster CSL24UL Troubleshooting: Codes, Symptoms, and Safe Checks

Use the CSL24UL diagnostic display and input LEDs to trace power, command, obstruction, battery, and safety-device problems—without bypassing gate protection.

If a LiftMaster CSL24UL gate operator is not working, first note exactly what the gate does, then read the diagnostic history and input LEDs before resetting or replacing anything. The displayed code and active inputs can point to a power, command, obstruction, safety-device, or mechanical issue. Do not bypass an entrapment sensor to get the gate moving.

Start with the symptom and diagnostic history

Record whether the gate is completely stationary, starts and reverses, opens but will not close, or ignores only a particular command. Check the operator’s diagnostic display and input LEDs while the problem is present. An active input can explain a symptom that might otherwise look like a failed motor or board.

The CSL24UL manual says the diagnostic display shows a sequence number followed by a code. It stores up to 20 codes, then overwrites the oldest; some codes appear only briefly and are not saved. Press STOP to exit the diagnostic view. Holding STOP for six seconds clears the history, so write down relevant codes first. See the CSL24UL installation manual for the display procedure and full code table.

If the display is off or the motor will not run

No display or apparently dead operator

The manual’s troubleshooting chart starts with the AC and battery supply, fuses, and low or depleted batteries; a control-board failure is also possible. Check the basic power conditions before assuming the board has failed. Replace a fuse only with the same type and rating.

LiftMaster K1D8389-1CC Control Board for DC Pad Mounted Operators RSLUL, RSWUL, CSW24UL, CSL24UL
  • K1D8389-1CCMC is a UL325 Main Control Board Replacement Kit. For use with various LiftMaster DC Pad-Mount Commercial and Residential UL325 Approved Gate Operators; manufactured after 2016 only
  • This main control board is backwards compatible for older second generation gate operators and will require the following UL325 Safety Regulations: UL325 Monitored Entrapment Protection System Monitored Photoelectric Safety Eye Sensors, or Edge Sensors on the OPEN Entrapment Zone are MANDATORY.
  • IMPORTANT NOTE: Failure to add the OPEN Monitored Entrapment Zone Protection System will cause the unit to not function properly.
  • Compatible with the following models: CSL24U, CSL24UL, CSW24U, CSW24UL, RSL12U, RSL12UL, RSW12U, RSW12UL

Display works, but the motor does not run

Possible causes listed in the manual include a stuck reset switch, an active stop circuit or missing stop jumper, low batteries, an active open or close command, an active entrapment-protection input, an active loop or probe, or a control-board fault. Check the input LEDs and wiring condition rather than bypassing a stop or safety circuit.

If the gate opens but will not close

Check for an open command or vehicle detector that remains active, and inspect the fire-department input. Confirm that Timer-to-Close is enabled if automatic closing is expected. Also check the operator’s AC-fail or low-battery behavior and the close-direction entrapment-protection input. The manual directs users to inspect inputs and settings; it does not recommend defeating a safety device.

If the gate stops or reverses while moving

Look for an obstruction and check whether a command or vehicle-detector input is still active. The gate must move freely through its full travel; mechanical binding or drag should be corrected before changing operator settings.

Code 91 indicates a force reversal: check for an obstruction and confirm the mechanical assembly is engaged and moves freely. Code 93 indicates an RPM or stall reversal; the manual directs checking for obstruction, wiring, and free mechanical movement, and lists the APE assembly as a possible replacement. If the gate does not move freely or the cause is not obvious, have a qualified commercial gate technician inspect it.

What common CSL24UL diagnostic codes mean

This is a selected guide, not a substitute for the complete manual table. Codes and prescribed checks can vary by operator model and manual revision.

Code Meaning and first check
31 Internal main control-board failure. The manual directs disconnecting power for 15 seconds and reconnecting it; if the condition continues, replace the board. Have a qualified technician handle board work.
34 Absolute Position Encoder (APE) error. Inspect the APE assembly and wiring; the manual says to replace the assembly if necessary.
35 Maximum run time exceeded. Check for obstruction and reprogram the limits.
40–42 Battery overvoltage, overcurrent, or no battery detected at boot. Inspect the harness, battery configuration, and connections. The manual warns against mixing 12V and 24V configurations.
43 Exit-loop error involving a missing or shorted/open LiftMaster plug-in loop-detector circuit. Inspect loop wiring and connections.
46 Wireless-edge battery low. Replace the edge’s batteries.
50 Run-distance error. Inspect limit positions and switch operation; the manual says run distance can be relearned by setting the handing again.
53 Brownout. Review the supply and wiring.
54 Wireless second-operator communication error. Confirm the second operator has power; use the manual’s wireless relearn procedure if needed.
60 Minimum monitored entrapment protection devices are not installed. Review device connections. The manual says slide-gate operators require at least one external monitored device for each direction.
61–75 Entrapment inputs are held or triggered. Check for an actual obstruction, then inspect alignment, inputs, and wiring as applicable.
80–84 Communication or monitored-device faults. Check operator and expansion-board connections, and confirm monitored devices have the correct edge orientation and resistive end cap.
91 / 93 Force or RPM/stall reversal. Check for obstruction, free mechanical movement, and wiring as directed by the code table.
99 Normal operation; no action is required.

Battery and accessory checks

Replacement batteries

For the standard battery arrangement, the manual identifies two 7Ah batteries and specifies LiftMaster 29-NP712 replacements. It recommends replacing batteries every three years for best performance. Confirm the installed configuration before ordering; battery faults can also involve harness connections or an incorrect 12V/24V setup.

Match accessories to the installed configuration

Package and regional details can differ. LiftMaster lists the LMRRUL monitored retro-reflective photo eye, S505AL resistive edge, and LMWEKITU monitored wireless edge kit as CSL24ULWK package inclusions, and lists the LOOPDETLM plug-in loop detector, 892LT remote, and KPW250 wireless keypad among compatible accessories. These are not universal troubleshooting substitutions: check what is actually installed and use a replacement only when diagnosis supports it. See LiftMaster’s CSL24UL product page for current product and accessory information.

Safety limits and when to call a technician

A moving gate can cause serious injury or death. The installation manual requires protection for entrapment zones, including monitored external devices for opening and closing directions and two independent entrapment-protection systems for each entrapment zone. Do not jumper, disconnect, or bypass a sensor as a troubleshooting shortcut.

Disconnect AC or solar power and battery power before servicing, following the manual’s precautions. Call a qualified commercial gate professional for line-power or battery-wiring work, control-board replacement, safety-device wiring or alignment, force or limit setup, or a gate that binds or fails to move freely. The CSL24UL is a 24VDC commercial slide-gate operator; LiftMaster rates the CSL24ULWK for gates up to 50 feet and 1,500 pounds, a manufacturer specification rather than an independent performance test. For unit-specific instructions, use the manual matching your operator and revision, and check LiftMaster’s support page for current materials.
