Check that the water supply and control stop are open first. A weak flush, a continuous flush and a valve that will not flush can have different causes—and Sloan’s CX and Royal guides do not give interchangeable instructions.
Before troubleshooting: identify the valve and check water supply
Find the valve’s model or family identification and the matching Sloan guide before changing an adjustment or ordering parts. Sloan’s technical-document index lists repair and maintenance documents. The general Sloan Flushometer guide, Royal guide and CX Manual guide cover different product families.
- Confirm that water is available to the fixture and the relevant control stop is open.
- Look up the valve family and use its Sloan guide for any adjustment or repair.
- Only then consider disassembly or replacement parts.
For the CX manual flushometer specifically, Sloan says a closed shutoff sleeve can stop flow; its guide describes opening the sleeve by turning it counter-clockwise. Do not assume that sleeve procedure applies to a different Sloan family.
If the flushometer does not flush
A closed control stop or main water supply is a first check. Sloan’s general guide also lists a damaged handle assembly or worn relief valve among possible causes. For the CX manual family, the guide additionally identifies a closed shutoff sleeve or an incorrectly adjusted plunger screw. It directs users to the model’s depth guide for the plunger adjustment; do not apply that adjustment to another family without its instructions.

If the flush is weak or insufficient
A control stop that is not open enough, inadequate supply pressure, incorrect internal parts or a mismatch between the valve’s flush volume and the fixture can all contribute to a weak flush. Sloan’s CX guide also points to plunger adjustment. Check the fixture manufacturer’s minimum supply requirements; there is no single pressure target established here for every fixture and Sloan family.
Check that the valve and fixture are intended to work together. Sloan’s CX guide warns, for example, that a low-volume urinal model installed on a higher-volume closet fixture will not provide the intended flush. Use the matching product guide rather than trying a family-wide adjustment.

If the valve gives a short flush
For Royal flushometers, Sloan lists a worn or damaged diaphragm assembly, a damaged handle assembly, or a low-consumption diaphragm used in the wrong application as possible causes. Its guide names a diaphragm assembly and the B-51-A handle repair kit as replacement examples. Verify the Royal family, fixture application and current part compatibility before buying or replacing anything.
If the valve keeps running or flushes too long
Sloan’s general guide identifies a relief valve that is not seating properly or a bypass orifice clogged by foreign material or deposits as possible causes. The bypass orifice meters water into the upper chamber.

- Shut off the water at the control stop before opening the valve.
- Use the matching guide to disassemble and wash the working parts.
- If cleaning does not correct the problem, Sloan recommends replacing the inside parts kit.
Do not enlarge or damage the bypass orifice: changing its size can interfere with the valve’s metering.
If the valve chatters during flushing
Sloan’s general guide associates chattering with an incorrectly installed segment diaphragm for the model covered by that guide. Because diaphragm orientation and parts are family-specific, consult the matching product guide before reorienting or replacing an internal component.

Choose a compatible Sloan repair part
Sloan’s guides name inside parts kits, diaphragm assemblies, a B-51-A handle repair kit and replacement handle assemblies for applicable families. The Sloan Flushometer Repair Parts page also lists named assemblies, including the B-73-A handle assembly and vacuum-breaker assemblies. These names are not a universal compatibility list.

- Identify the valve family and fixture before ordering.
- Match the replacement part to the corresponding Sloan guide and current parts information.
- Do not choose a kit solely because a listing says it “fits Sloan” or looks similar.
Service safely and avoid damaging the valve
- Except at the control-stop inlet, Sloan cautions against using pipe sealant or plumbing grease on valve components and couplings.
- Do not use toothed tools on finished flushometers. Sloan recommends its A-50 Super-Wrench or another smooth-jawed wrench.
- Keep the bypass-orifice opening unchanged; do not enlarge or damage it.
