You can carve a small pair of hinged pliers from one piece of soft wood, but they are a novelty—not a tool for gripping or working with materials. In David Warther’s demonstration, the design is made with ten precise angled cuts in a small basswood blank. The hinge moves; the finished carving is not suitable for practical plier use.
What the one-piece wooden pliers are—and are not
The project frees two arms within a single block of wood so they remain connected at a working hinge. Gareth Branwyn’s 2016 Make: article describes the hinge mechanism as functional while explicitly cautioning that the carving is not for real-world use as pliers. Treat “working” as describing the moving hinge, not the ability to grip, clamp, or apply force like metal pliers.
Materials and blade
- Wood: Use a small piece of soft wood. The featured demonstration uses basswood.
- Knife: The article reports that Warther recommends a very short, very sharp blade. It also says he developed a special knife for carving the pliers, but does not identify a retail model.
Soft wood and a sharp, short blade are the source-backed starting points; the article does not establish a particular blank size or knife model.
How the carving works
Make describes the demonstration as ten precise, angled cuts. Their sides, angles, and depth must be kept in the right relation to one another, which can be confusing. The cut layout is visual: the article’s prose does not provide a complete, reliable diagram or enough detail to reconstruct the geometry safely and accurately.

Use David Warther’s embedded demonstration as the guide to the cut placement rather than improvising a sequence from a written summary: Make: Cut a Pair of Working Pliers from a Single Piece of Wood. No dimensions, timing, strength, or durability figures are established for the project.
Work carefully with the knife
This carving involves controlled cuts in a small piece of wood. The source notes the risk of cuts and the need for practice, but does not give a complete safety procedure. Follow established wood-carving safety guidance and use a setup that keeps hands clear of the blade; do not treat the brief tool recommendation as a substitute for instruction.

Where the technique comes from
Make identifies David Warther as the demonstrator and as the son of Ernest “Mooney” Warther, who continued carving wooden pliers and made them his calling card. The article attributes the origin story to David’s account: his father received an example from an itinerant man he met during his travels. That is an attributed story, not independently established history.
The same article reports that the Warther museum gives novelty pliers to visiting children; current practice is not established here. A separate historical woodworking excerpt describes another wooden-pliers method using soft, corky white pine and a knife or small chisel. That is a distinct approach, not the ten-cut basswood demonstration described above.
