For most houseplants, check the soil rather than watering on a fixed weekday. Water when the surface inch is dry, then water the soil thoroughly and let excess drain away. Treat that as a starting point—not a rule for every plant—and adjust for the species, pot, light, temperature and season.

How to tell when a houseplant needs water

Push a finger into the soil and check below the surface, especially in a larger pot. For many houseplants, the University of Minnesota Extension recommends watering when the top inch feels dry. The Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) advises waiting until the compost surface has dried. A pot that feels lighter can offer another clue. Neither source recommends using a fixed calendar as a substitute for checking the plant and soil.

The dry-soil cue varies by plant. Penn State Extension says Monstera can dry 1 to 2 inches down between thorough waterings, while University of Minnesota Extension advises that Fittonia should not be allowed to dry out fully. Follow guidance for the particular plant when it differs from the general top-inch starting point.

How to water, step by step

  1. Check the soil. Feel below the surface and compare the moisture with the plant’s needs. Do not water just because it is a particular day.
  2. Water the soil. When the plant is ready, direct water to the soil at the base rather than relying on a splash over the leaves.
  3. Water thoroughly. Add water until it runs out through the pot’s drainage hole, as the RHS recommends.
  4. Let the pot drain. Allow excess water to escape, then empty the saucer. Do not leave the pot sitting in retained water.

Why drainage matters

Roots need air as well as moisture. A pot without effective drainage, or one left standing in water, can leave the root zone too wet. University of Minnesota Extension connects overwatering and poor drainage with root rot and fungus-gnat problems. Choose a pot with a drainage hole, and make sure its saucer does not remain full after watering. See the RHS houseplant growing guide and the University of Minnesota Extension page on managing insects on indoor plants.

What changes how often a plant needs checking

  • Room temperature and light: Warm rooms and brighter locations can mean more frequent checks; plants in cooler rooms generally need less frequent watering.
  • Plant size and growth: Larger plants may need more frequent checks. Season and active growth also affect how quickly soil dries.
  • Plant type: Moisture preferences differ, as the Monstera and Fittonia examples show.
  • Pot and soil condition: If water runs through unusually quickly or the soil no longer absorbs it well, the pot may be rootbound or the soil may be old. University of Minnesota Extension lists these as cues to consider repotting or refreshing soil; fast drainage alone does not prove the plant simply needs more frequent watering.

Use those factors to decide when to check again, not to create a universal schedule. The University of Minnesota Extension spring houseplant-care guidance also recommends responding to the plant and soil rather than watering by the calendar.

How to interpret wilting or yellow leaves

Wilting and yellowing do not identify a watering problem on their own: both too much and too little moisture can stress a plant, and symptoms can overlap with other causes. Before watering in response to a symptom, check the soil moisture, confirm that the pot drains, and account for the plant’s needs and its light and temperature. University of Minnesota Extension’s winter houseplant tips also describe drainage and soil-condition cues that may point to repotting rather than a change in watering frequency.
