To organize messy dresser drawers, start by emptying and editing them, then arrange what remains around your real routine. Measure before adding bins or dividers, and choose folds and categories you can keep up with. There is no single layout that works for every dresser—or every household.
Start with what belongs in the dresser
1. Empty one drawer at a time
Work drawer by drawer if tackling the whole dresser feels like too much. An empty drawer makes its dimensions and contents easier to assess without turning the project into one large pile.
2. Remove items that do not belong—or no longer serve you
Set aside clothing that belongs elsewhere and pieces you no longer wear or need. Returning only useful items gives each drawer more room to function.
3. Clean before putting anything back
Wipe out the empty drawer, then let it dry before replacing clothes. It is easier to clean now than after everything is arranged.

Choose a layout that fits your dresser and routine
4. Measure before buying organizers
Record each drawer’s width, length, and height; check its usable depth as well. Measurements help you avoid inserts that do not fit or take up more space than they save. The Washington Post and Real Homes both recommend measuring before choosing organizers or planning placement (The Washington Post; Real Homes).
5. Give drawers broad clothing categories
Try one drawer for tops, another for socks and underwear, and another for pajamas. Broad categories make it easier to find and put away clothes without creating a fussy system. Change the categories to fit what you own.
6. Group clothes by activity when that saves time
If you regularly reach for a complete set of workout clothes, keep those pieces together. The same approach can work for sleepwear or another activity you dress for often; it is an alternative to sorting everything by garment type.

7. Arrange drawers in the order you get dressed
Think through your usual morning and place the categories you reach for first where they are easiest to access. Organizing around your routine can be more useful than copying someone else’s drawer map. As organizer Vernestine Laughinghouse put it in The Washington Post, “the best way to organize your dresser really depends on how you move through your morning.”
8. Keep frequent-use items in the easiest-to-reach drawer
Use the most accessible drawer for clothes you reach for often. Less-used items can go in drawers that are harder to reach, provided the arrangement still works with your dresser’s shape and your needs.
9. Match the contents to the drawer’s depth
Shallow drawers can suit small, thin items; deeper drawers may accommodate bulkier folded clothes. Treat that as a starting point, not a rule: the right arrangement depends on the items and the usable space in each drawer.

Make clothes easier to see and put away
10. Try vertical or file folding
Fold suitable garments into compact rectangles that can stand on edge, then place them in rows. Compared with a stack, an upright row can reveal more of what is in the drawer without moving clothes on top. The official KonMari FAQ describes upright folding, while IKEA also recommends standing folded clothes for visibility (KonMari; IKEA U.S.).
11. Roll suitable clothes and stand the rolls in rows
For items that roll neatly, make compact rolls and line them up so you can see the options at a glance. This is another visibility option, not a requirement to roll every garment; use it only when the rolls stay tidy and are easy to return to place.
12. Keep the folding method you will actually maintain
If a new folding technique makes laundry harder to put away, use a familiar fold instead. A practical system that lasts is more useful than a precise arrangement that quickly unravels.

13. Contain loose small items in boxes or bins
Small boxes or fabric bins can keep socks, underwear, or other loose pieces from spreading across a drawer. Check that the containers fit the measured space and leave enough room to retrieve items easily.
14. Use dividers to separate larger rows
Dividers can help keep rows of folded clothes in place. Keep the sections broad enough to be easy to maintain; dividing every item into its own tiny category can make putting laundry away feel like extra work. Laughinghouse told The Washington Post, “Dividers and organizers make it easier for each item to go back to its intentional home.”
15. Give jewelry and accessories a contained area
A small tray or dedicated section can stop accessories from becoming mixed in with clothing. Keep it simple and use a container suited to the items you store there.

Move clothes that do not suit drawer storage
16. Store bulky or off-season pieces elsewhere
Move bulky or currently unused seasonal clothes to an appropriate wardrobe or under-bed storage location if keeping them in the dresser crowds out everyday items. Not every garment belongs in a drawer: the official KonMari FAQ suggests hanging soft materials or highly tailored cuts, as well as some delicate garments, rather than forcing them into folded storage. Marie Kondo’s guidance there includes the line, “Hang any clothes that look like they would be happier hung up” (KonMari).
How full should a dresser drawer be?
In the official KonMari FAQ, Marie Kondo describes “90 percent” as a rule of thumb for storage and says drawers should look full but not stuffed. Treat that as her organizing guideline, not a universal measurement: leave enough room to see and retrieve clothing without compressing it. A layout that fits your drawer and remains easy to use matters more than hitting a precise fill level.
