Three repeating beeps commonly mean a smoke alarm is detecting smoke—but the code is not universal. If an unexplained alarm is repeating, get everyone outside first. Once you are safely away, call emergency services as appropriate; First Alert advises calling 9-1-1 for its three-beep smoke signal. Check the exact model’s manual only after safety is established.
What three repeating beeps can mean
Kidde says three repeating beeps mean its alarm senses smoke, while emphasizing that alarm codes vary by model. Treat this as guidance for Kidde alarms, not a code shared by every brand. See Kidde’s sound-pattern guidance and check the manual for the alarm installed in your home.

On First Alert’s SC7010B combination smoke and carbon monoxide alarm, three beeps followed by a pause indicate smoke; four beeps followed by a pause indicate carbon monoxide. The manual also uses LED behavior to distinguish signals. These instructions apply to that model, not to all combination alarms. Read the SC7010B manual.
What to do if the alarm is sounding now
- Get everyone outside. Do not delay to find the manual, press hush, or investigate the source of an unexplained repeating alarm.
- Call from a safe location. First Alert advises people who hear its three-beep smoke signal to evacuate and call 9-1-1 once safely outside. Follow local emergency-service guidance. First Alert’s safety guidance explains its advice.
- Identify the signal only after reaching safety. Note whether the sound repeats or is a brief periodic chirp, and observe any light or voice prompt. Then consult the exact alarm’s manual.
How to distinguish an alarm from a test or a fault
A test sequence
Three beeps can occur during a test as well as during a smoke warning. In the SC7010B manual, the test sounds the smoke pattern and then the CO pattern. Confirm whether someone intentionally started a test, but do not assume an unexplained alarm is only a test.

- End-of-life warning lets you know when it’s time to replace the alarm
- Test/silence button for efficient testing to ensure alarm is working properly
For routine checks, use the built-in test button and follow the model’s manual. First Alert recommends weekly testing and warns against testing with an open flame or vehicle exhaust. First Alert’s weekly-testing instructions describe the safer method.
A short, periodic chirp
A brief chirp that recurs periodically is different from a sustained repeating alarm, but its meaning still depends on the model. Kidde’s general guide says one chirp followed by a pause often indicates a trouble condition and two chirps followed by a pause indicate end of life; Kidde cautions that patterns vary between models. Check the manual rather than applying that guide to another brand.

Malfunction, battery, or end-of-life signals
The SC7010B manual describes three rapid chirps every minute as a malfunction signal and directs the owner to replace the unit if it does not operate properly. That model uses two AA batteries, but this is not a general battery recommendation: alarms may require another battery type or have sealed batteries. Follow the instructions for the exact unit.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What to check in your alarm’s manual
Find the model number on the alarm and look up its manufacturer’s instructions. Compare the sound pattern and pause cadence, whether the unit detects smoke only or smoke and CO, and any LED or voice indicators. Check how the manual describes test, hush, low-battery, malfunction, and end-of-life modes, along with whether the battery is replaceable and what type it requires. If the manual identifies a malfunction or end-of-life condition, follow its replacement directions and choose a compatible alarm that meets household and local requirements.
