For construction and interior work, its best-established uses are furniture and cabinetry—not structural framing. The name can also refer to a fruit flavor or a cherry-colored finish, so confirm the species when buying lumber.
What is black cherry?
Prunus serotina is a tree in the rose family, also called wild black cherry, rum cherry and mountain black cherry. Its dark, small ripe fruit is eaten by birds and mammals. USDA Forest Service material also records traditional uses of the fruit in jelly, wine and, historically, to flavor spirits.
Black cherry is distinct from sweet cherry and from products labeled “black cherry” solely for their flavor or color. Geographic forms vary, so a tree’s size, range and growing suitability should not be assumed uniform.
What is black cherry wood used for?
Black cherry is valued for furniture and cabinetry. The USDA Forest Products Laboratory describes its heartwood as darkening toward reddish brown, with a fine, uniform texture and generally straight grain. USDA NRCS calls it one of North America’s valued cabinet and furniture woods.

These properties make it a choice for visible interior woodwork where appearance and finish matter. The cited USDA material supports furniture and cabinet uses; it does not establish black cherry as a standard structural framing lumber or provide a basis for specifying it for a particular load-bearing application. Confirm the product’s grade and suitability with the supplier and project professional.
What to check when buying black cherry lumber
- Species: Ask for confirmation that the wood is Prunus serotina, rather than unspecified cherry, a cherry-colored finish or a look-alike.
- Product form: Establish whether you are buying solid wood or veneer.
- Dimensions and grade: Confirm board dimensions and the grade relevant to your intended work.
- Appearance: Review the actual grain and color; heartwood tends to darken toward reddish brown.
- Application: Make sure the material and grade meet the requirements of the project rather than relying on the species name alone.
Where does black cherry grow?
The species’ range includes much of eastern North America, with regional populations extending into the Southwest and Central America. USDA sources describe geographic variation and planting or reclamation uses. For planting, check the botanical identity, local suitability, seller provenance and planting guidance; a general “black cherry” label alone does not establish that a seedling is appropriate for a particular site.

Is black cherry edible?
USDA Forest Service sources describe ripe fruit uses including jelly and wine. Those traditional uses do not establish health benefits or mean every part of the plant is safe to eat. Keep the fruit of Prunus serotina distinct from sweet cherries and from foods that use “black cherry” only as a flavor name.

Do not treat black cherry bark, leaves, twigs, seeds or extracts as universally safe. USDA references report cyanogenic compounds in these plant parts. Wilted foliage is a documented livestock hazard because cyanide can be released as leaves wilt; keep potentially exposed livestock away and consult a veterinarian or poison-control resource if poisoning is suspected.

The Forest Service records historical bark use in cough remedies, tonics and sedatives, but historical use is not proof of effectiveness or safety. The FDA database entry for wild cherry bark extract is a food-substance listing, not clinical evidence or an endorsement of treatment claims. The cited sources do not provide a human safety assessment or treatment recommendation.
