Best Washing Machines to Prevent Mold: A Buyer’s Guide

The least mold-prone washer is the one whose upkeep fits your routine. Learn what front-load seals, top-load styles, ventilation and self-clean cycles can—and can’t—do.

No washing machine can guarantee that mold will never develop. For less mold-prone ownership, compare how easily a washer can dry out and be maintained, then choose a loading style, efficiency level and size that fit your home and routine. Front-loaders have an airtight door seal that can hold moisture; top-loaders generally avoid that particular gasket, but every washer still needs care.

Which washer type has less mold-related upkeep?

Consumer Reports’ 2025 survey summary found that 13% of front-load owners, 3% of high-efficiency (HE) top-load owners and 1% of traditional top-load agitator owners reported mold or mildew buildup. These are owner-reported survey results, not a controlled test, so they do not prove that washer design alone caused the difference. Consumer Reports’ front-load washer guide presents the figures in its survey summary.

The figures suggest a practical distinction, not a guarantee: a front-loader’s door gasket needs attention, while a top-loader avoids that style of seal. Top-load models still need the maintenance described in their manuals, and a buyer should weigh upkeep against loading preference, efficiency, cleaning, capacity and fit.

Front-load washers

ENERGY STAR explains that a front-loader’s airtight seal can trap moisture while the machine is idle, which can lead to mold. Its guidance is to leave the door ajar for an hour or two after use so moisture can evaporate, while taking care around children. ENERGY STAR’s clothes-washer guidance also recommends following the manufacturer’s maintenance instructions.

#1 Best Overall
GE PROFILE 28 Inch Smart Front Load Washer with 4.8 cu. ft. Capacity in White GFW550SSNWW
  • Large 4.8 Cu. Ft. Capacity : Wash more in fewer loads—perfect for families and busy households with heavy laundry demands.
  • UltraFresh Vent System with OdorBlock: Helps eliminate excess moisture after each wash cycle, keeping your washer interior fresh between uses.
  • Built-In WiFi with SmartHQ App Integration: Remotely control your washer from your phone—start, stop, monitor, and receive alerts anytime, anywhere.
  • Quick Wash Cycle (20 Minutes): Perfect for lightly soiled clothes, this cycle delivers a fast and efficient clean when time is limited.
  • Time Saver Mode (35 Minutes): Enjoy a full, deep clean in just 35 minutes—ideal for mixed loads on busy days.

Some front-load models add features intended to help the drum dry or ventilate between loads. Whirlpool describes FreshFlow ventilation, a Dry Drum cycle, a FanFresh option and an antimicrobial rubber door seal on select models. These may make freshness maintenance easier, but the manufacturer’s guide does not establish that they prevent mold. Whirlpool’s 2026 mold-prevention guide still recommends regular gasket care.

Top-load washers

HE top-loaders and traditional agitator top-loaders do not have the front-loader’s door gasket. The 2025 survey figures above show fewer owners in both top-load groups reported mold or mildew buildup than in the front-load group, but do not make either style mold-proof. Distinguish HE impeller models from agitator models when comparing efficiency, capacity and the specific features of the machines you are considering.

What features are worth comparing?

  • Self-clean or clean-washer cycle: A dedicated maintenance cycle can make routine drum cleaning easier. Check the manual for how and when to use it.
  • Drum ventilation or drying: A built-in fan or drying cycle may help moisture escape between loads. Whirlpool lists FreshFlow, Dry Drum and FanFresh on select models; verify that the particular model you are considering includes the feature.
  • Accessible door seal: On front-loaders, consider whether the gasket is easy to inspect, wipe and clean. An antimicrobial seal is a feature claim, not proof that mold cannot develop.
  • Maintenance reminders: If offered, reminders can help you keep up with the cycle and cleaning schedule set out in the manual.
  • Safe door position: Consider whether you can leave a front-loader ajar after use without creating a hazard for children or interfering with the room’s layout.

How should efficiency affect the choice?

ENERGY STAR says certified front-load washers use about 50% less energy and water than top-load agitator washers. It also says ENERGY STAR certified clothes washers use about 20% less energy and 30% less water than regular washers. Those comparisons have different baselines; neither makes every front-loader more efficient than every top-loader. HE top-load impeller washers are a separate category, so compare the exact models rather than relying on loading style alone.

Read the model’s EnergyGuide label and compare capacity and efficiency metrics, including Integrated Modified Energy Factor (IMEF) and Integrated Water Factor (IWF). ENERGY STAR’s clothes-washer guidance includes a product finder for comparing certified models. Consider your normal load size as well as the machine’s listed capacity: the right choice needs to handle your household’s laundry without being oversized for the available space.

How to choose a washer for your home

  1. Measure the installation space. Check width, depth and height, plus door swing and clearance for loading. If stacking is planned, confirm that the model is designed for it and that the installation works in your space.
  2. Choose the loading style that suits your habits. If you want to avoid wiping a front-load gasket, a top-loader may suit you. If you prefer a front-loader, plan for airing and seal care rather than expecting a special feature to remove upkeep.
  3. Compare specific maintenance features. Look for a self-clean cycle and, if useful, a drum-drying or ventilation feature. Confirm each feature on the model’s specification page and consult its manual.
  4. Compare efficiency and capacity. Use the EnergyGuide label and ENERGY STAR information to evaluate the particular machines, including their efficiency metrics and capacity.
  5. Be realistic about the routine. Pick a washer whose required care you can maintain: airing after use where appropriate, drying or cleaning the gasket on a front-loader, and running the prescribed maintenance cycle.

Care habits that help reduce moisture and buildup

After each front-load wash

ENERGY STAR recommends leaving the door ajar for an hour or two after use to let moisture evaporate. Whirlpool recommends wiping the gasket dry after each cycle. Keep child safety and the room layout in mind when leaving the door open, and use the washer manual’s instructions if they differ.

Clean the gasket and run the maintenance cycle

Whirlpool recommends regular gasket cleaning and regular use of the self-clean cycle. Its guide names affresh tablets as an option for that cycle; use only products compatible with your washer and follow the manual for product choice and frequency. A Consumer Reports search-result summary also names washer cleaner as an option, but does not establish a universal cleaner or schedule. Do not assume bleach or vinegar is suitable for every model.

What the survey numbers do—and do not—say

A separate Consumer Reports search-result summary says 16% of front-load owners in its “latest consumer survey” reported mold, mildew and odor issues. The summary does not state the survey year, so that figure cannot be treated as a dated update to Consumer Reports’ separately reported 2025 results. Consumer Reports’ mold and mildew guidance is the source of that summary.

Neither survey establishes that any washer design or feature prevents mold. The useful buying signal is to choose a machine whose upkeep features and loading style match the care you are willing to do, while treating ventilation, antimicrobial materials and self-clean cycles as aids—not guarantees.
