For color through summer, choose flowers that match your garden’s sun, heat, drainage and upkeep—and treat “all summer” as a goal, not a guarantee. Bloom periods vary with the plant variety, weather and growing conditions. These 12 annuals are useful starting points; combine them with summer-blooming perennials if you want a display that returns in later years.

12 flowers for summer color

Most flowers below are grown as annuals in the cited extension guidance, so plan to replant them each year. The best choice depends on your site: a flower that thrives in hot, sunny soil may struggle in shade or ground that stays wet.

1. Cosmos

Cosmos bipinnatus can bloom from June through October, according to Illinois Extension’s cosmos guide. Give it full sun and well-drained, low-fertility soil. Remove faded flowers to encourage continued bloom; excessive watering or fertilizer can reduce flowering.

2. Angelonia

Angelonia is among the annuals recommended for sunny sites with average moisture in UMass Extension’s sun-planting combinations. Check the plant label for the needs of the variety you choose.

How to keep color going beyond one flush

For a display that includes plants returning in later years, combine annuals with perennials whose bloom times overlap or follow one another. Iowa State University Extension identifies daylilies and hostas as July- and August-blooming choices, and says coneflower, Shasta daisy, spike speedwell and yarrow begin in June and often continue into summer. These plants can stagger seasonal color, but that does not mean each blooms continuously all summer.

Choose flowers for the actual site

Measure sunlight

Virginia Cooperative Extension defines full sun as six or more hours of direct sunlight per day. Observe the planting area before choosing flowers: a mismatch between light and plant needs can reduce flowering or stress the plant.

Check drainage and moisture

Most flowering annuals do best in full sun and well-drained soil, according to Purdue Extension’s annual-flower guidance. Wet, heavy soil is unsuitable for many annuals. Choose flowers for the conditions you have rather than relying on a broad “summer flower” label.

Decide how much maintenance you want

Removing faded flowers can help some plants continue blooming, but deadheading does not make every perennial rebloom. Penn State Extension cautions that only specific perennials rebloom or have a longer bloom period after deadheading, and a later flush may have fewer or smaller flowers. For cosmos, Illinois Extension recommends deadheading for continued flowering.

Plan for your local season

Warm-season annuals are generally reliable bloomers through summer, but Virginia Cooperative Extension notes that very few annuals perform well from spring through fall. For color over a longer period, combine species with different bloom windows or rotate cool-season and warm-season plantings. For seed-grown flowers, follow local sowing guidance and the packet rather than treating a regional calendar date as universal.

When comparing candidates, consider whether you are comfortable replanting annuals each year, how much sun and heat the site receives, whether the soil drains well, and whether you want flowers for borders, containers or cutting. Also account for the upkeep you are willing to provide, especially deadheading.
