But cutting limits vary by power, metal, gas and setup, and xTool classifies the assembled welder and cutter as a Class 4 laser system intended for professional use. Its safety guidance calls for trained personnel and a controlled work area.
What the MetalFab can do—and what “anyone” leaves out
The xTool MetalFab is sold in 800 W and 1200 W configurations. xTool describes both as systems for handheld laser welding and cutting, with a compatible CNC cutter for sheet cutting. The figures below are manufacturer specifications, not independent test results.

The CNC cutter is designed to work with the MetalFab’s integrated laser source. xTool says it is not compatible with standalone xTool laser modules or laser welding and cutting units from other manufacturers. CNC cutting also has a material restriction: xTool warns against processing copper and other highly reflective materials because reflected light can damage the laser source or optics. xTool’s CNC Cutter compatibility and material guidance explains these limits.
How much metal can each configuration cut?
“Dross-free cut” and “maximum cut” are different specifications. A maximum-thickness cut may leave dross—the material residue attached to a cut edge—so it should not be read as a promise of a clean, finished edge. The following figures are from xTool’s support table updated September 8, 2026; ranges start at 0.2 mm where stated.

These are xTool’s published CNC cutting figures, not universal limits for every setup or material grade. Its shorter FAQ summary lists 1200 W limits of 5 mm stainless steel, 4 mm aluminum, 3 mm brass and 10 mm carbon or galvanized steel; those figures should not be substituted for the support table’s separately labeled dross-free and maximum columns. xTool also says that repeated passes do not increase the maximum thickness if the first pass fails to cut through. Welding capacity depends on power and material
xTool states that the 800 W model can weld stainless or carbon steel up to 4 mm thick, while the 1200 W model can weld those materials up to 5 mm. Treat these as manufacturer-stated capabilities, not a guarantee for every joint, position or welding condition. Wire is not always needed: xTool says plates thinner than 1 mm may be welded without it, and small seams may use autogenous welding. Its guidance recommends matching the base sheet and wire material, lists wire grades for particular metals, and supports 0.8, 1.0, 1.2 and 1.6 mm wire diameters. These are setup recommendations, not a substitute for selecting parameters for the actual workpiece.
Gas and nozzle setup affect the cut
The machine’s published thickness figures do not describe a gas-free, one-setting process. xTool’s instructions specify gas, pressure and nozzle guidance according to material and thickness.

- Common thinner sheets: xTool lists high-purity nitrogen or argon, or compressed air, for many cutting applications.
- Thicker carbon or galvanized steel: xTool specifies high-purity oxygen with a double-layer nozzle and focus extension tube.
- Welding: for listed common metals, xTool recommends high-purity nitrogen or argon at 15–30 L/min or 0.1–0.2 MPa. It specifies argon for titanium-alloy welding.
For common metals such as stainless steel, brass and aluminum, xTool says nitrogen can produce a bright, clean cut edge. Compressed air costs less, but may not give the same surface finish; xTool does not publish a quantified cost or finish comparison. Consult its material-specific parameters before choosing gas, pressure or nozzle.

xTool states that the fully assembled MetalFab laser welder and CNC cutter is “intended for professional use only.” Its safety article identifies the working laser as Class 4 at 1080 nm ± 10 nm and calls for a qualified Laser Safety Officer, trained personnel and a laser-controlled area. xTool specifies protective eyewear that shields 1080 ± 10 nm with optical density greater than 6, and references workplace training under ANSI Z136.1. Ordinary welding goggles should not be assumed to meet that laser specification.

The welding instructions separately direct users to complete safety training and wear laser-safety goggles or a helmet, a mask or face shield, and heat-resistant gloves. These requirements come from xTool’s guidance, including its welding safety and setup instructions and CNC Cutter safety notice, updated August 22, 2025. Protective equipment does not replace the controlled-area and training requirements.
Is the MetalFab appropriate for your work?
The capability specifications may be relevant for a trained shop comparing sheet-metal cutting and welding options. They do not establish that the system is suitable for an untrained homeowner or casual user. Before planning a job, identify the exact MetalFab power configuration, material and thickness, required edge quality, gas and nozzle setup, and whether the work area can meet the manufacturer’s laser-safety requirements.

The published material table covers several steel types, stainless steel, galvanized sheet, aluminum alloys, brass, titanium and nickel alloys, bronze, magnesium and cobalt-based alloys, and painted or coated sheet. That broad list is not permission to process any material regardless of reflectivity or condition; follow the manufacturer’s material-specific limits and warnings. Independent performance tests and long-term owner evidence are not established here, so xTool’s figures should be understood as its own specifications rather than independently verified outcomes.
