Plan Christmas decorations around three basics: where they will be used, what they are made of, and who can reach them. Choose a safe spot for the tree, inspect every light strand, keep candles and breakable ornaments out of harm’s way, and take down a live tree when it dries out. These steps make it easier to create a festive room without overlooking fire, electrical, fall, or ingestion hazards.
Start with a decorating plan
Before putting up decorations, identify heat sources, outlets, doorways, stairs, and areas children or pets can reach. Keep the tree clear of heat and exits, route cords where they will not create a trip hazard, and use a stable ladder rather than a chair when decorating overhead. Falls were the most frequent category in the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission’s estimate of 18,400 emergency-department injuries associated with holiday decorating from November 2016 through January 2017; strains or sprains and lacerations were also among the leading categories. Choose and place the Christmas tree
Real trees
Pick a fresh tree, secure it in a sturdy stand, and add water every day. Keep it away from fireplaces, heaters, candles, and other heat sources, and do not block an exit with the tree. Remove it after the holidays or sooner if it becomes dry. The U.S. Fire Administration recommends watering live trees daily; Health Canada also advises keeping them away from heat and removing them when dry. USFA · Health Canada
Plan for disposal before bringing a tree home. Follow your municipality’s collection and recycling rules; schedules and accepted methods vary by location. Health Canada notes that most municipalities have tree-recycling programs. Health Canada

Artificial trees
CPSC advises looking for a “Fire Resistant” label on an artificial tree. The label does not mean the tree cannot catch fire, so keep it away from heat and use lights according to their instructions. CPSC and NIST
Use Christmas lights suited to the location
Use only lights rated for the place they will be installed: indoor lights indoors and outdoor-rated lights outside. Inspect every strand, including new ones. Do not use a strand with frayed or exposed wires, loose connections, or broken sockets. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for wattage and how many strands may be connected. Turn lights off before leaving home or going to bed. For outdoor electrical lights, use a ground-fault circuit interrupter (GFCI)-protected outlet or circuit, as advised by USFA, CPSC, and Health Canada.

Battery-operated lights avoid a mains connection, but batteries can create an ingestion hazard, especially button batteries. Choose products with securely closed, inaccessible battery compartments when young children are in the home. Health Canada

Decorate with candles and fragile ornaments carefully
Burning and flameless candles
Keep burning candles in sight, set them in stable holders, and place them where children, pets, or passing traffic cannot knock them over. USFA specifies keeping candles at least 12 inches from anything that burns. Battery-operated flameless candles avoid an open flame, but their battery compartments still need to be secure around young children. USFA · Health Canada
Ornaments and small decorations
Place sharp, breakable, or small-part ornaments beyond the reach of young children and pets. Keep button batteries and water beads inaccessible; swallowing them can cause serious harm. Consider sturdier, larger decorations in low or high-traffic areas, and secure hanging items so they cannot fall into reach. Health Canada

Why these precautions matter
The risks are not limited to the tree. USFA attributes almost one-third of home Christmas tree fires to electrical problems, although its page does not state the underlying data period. CPSC reported U.S. averages of about 100 Christmas tree fires, 10 deaths, 10 injuries, and $12 million in property loss per year for 2013–2015. For additional context, Health Canada’s assessment records 126 Canadian reports involving decorative lighting strings received between June 20, 2011, and December 31, 2022, including nine electric-shock injuries and nine minor-burn injuries.
