Plant first, then add optional miniatures. The plants—not the decorations—determine the light, soil, and watering the garden needs.
Choose the setting and style
Decide whether your garden will be indoors, on a sheltered patio, or outdoors in the weather. Then choose a theme that fits the site, such as a woodland scene or a sunny miniature landscape. The location affects plant choices and whether decorations need to withstand rain and sun. You can make the garden in a container or incorporate it into an existing garden bed.
Container or garden bed?
- Container: A planted bowl or planter is portable and keeps the scene contained, but it needs a clear drainage route.
- Garden bed: This can blend into an existing landscape. Choose plants for the bed’s actual light, moisture, climate, and exposure rather than assuming a miniature theme changes their needs.

Gather a container, plants, and supplies
Choose a planter with drainage
A planted container needs to hold the growing medium and let excess water escape. For a bowl or planter, check for drainage holes before filling it. If you want to use a decorative pot without holes, place a draining nursery pot inside it and make sure water can leave the inner pot without collecting in or being blocked by the outer one. Skip the gravel layer at the bottom of an ordinary pot: it is not needed to provide drainage. The pot’s drainage holes and an unobstructed outlet are what matter.
Select plants for the site and for each other
Look for compact, small-leaved plants or plants that can be pruned to stay in scale with the scene. More important than a universal list of “fairy plants” is whether the plants you group together share compatible light and water needs. Consider the location’s sunlight, temperature, and exposure, and check local suitability before choosing species.

For succulents, use a cactus or succulent growing mix. For other plants, choose a container mix suited to their needs. Avoid ordinary garden soil in a container: it can compact and impede root growth. UC Agriculture and Natural Resources provides further fairy-garden construction and plant-selection guidance.
Prepare optional decorations
A tiny house, figures, miniature furniture, decorative stones, or a path can establish the theme, but none is required. If the garden will sit outdoors in the elements, choose pieces made to tolerate that exposure. A narrow trowel can make planting easier in a small bowl; the University of Florida IFAS Fairy Garden Planters activity lists small-scale planting materials and decorations.

Build the garden step by step
- Set the scene: Choose the location, theme, and whether you are planting in a container or garden bed.
- Check drainage for a container: Use a planter with drainage holes, or set a draining inner pot inside a decorative outer pot while keeping its outlet clear.
- Arrange plants before planting: Place compact plants in the scene to check their scale and group them by compatible light and water needs.
- Add the right growing medium: Use a container mix suited to the plants; use cactus or succulent mix for succulents. Do not add a gravel layer as a default drainage fix.
- Plant, then decorate: Set in the plants first. Add a miniature house, figures, stones, or other details only if you want them.
- Water and observe: Water according to the plants’ needs, let excess drain away, and watch how the plants respond in their location.
Care for the plants and keep the scene in scale
There is no single watering calendar for every miniature garden. Watering depends on the plants and their growing conditions. Check the growing medium and each plant’s needs, water carefully, and allow excess water to drain rather than leaving the container standing in collected water.
As plants grow, prune them when appropriate or replace those that outgrow the scene. Keep monitoring light, temperature, and moisture in the garden’s actual location; a change in season or exposure can alter what the plants need. The Royal Horticultural Society’s miniature-garden activity and California Garden Clubs’ May 2021 guidance also offer activity-oriented ideas for miniature scenes.

Choose between a living garden and a decorative scene
A planted fairy garden is a small container or landscape planting, so it needs plant-appropriate growing medium, watering, and occasional pruning or replacement. A decorative-only scene can use miniatures without living plants, but it does not have the same plant-care requirements. Decide which kind you want before buying supplies so the container and materials suit the result.
