The available sources do not verify a Better Homes & Gardens (BHG) review with six named toilet bowl cleaners, so it would be misleading to present a ranked BHG list. For choosing a cleaner, compare its format, the kind of buildup it targets, and its product-specific directions. The guidance below draws on Consumer Reports and manufacturer product pages; it is not a BHG review.
Can the six BHG picks be verified?
No. The available material does not establish the names of BHG’s six products, its rankings, or its review method. A similarly titled Consumer Reports article is a separate publication and cannot substantiate BHG’s selections. Consumer Reports’ general format guidance and the official product directions below can help with a purchase, but they do not identify the “best six” for BHG.
Choose a cleaner by format and cleaning job
Liquid and gel cleaners

Foaming powder

Match the claim to the stain
If you are trying to address lime or rust rather than routine bowl soil, look for a product whose label specifically identifies that buildup. The available sources do not establish a comparative winner for those stains, so do not assume a product marketed for ordinary cleaning will perform the same way on mineral deposits.

Follow the exact label directions
Application amount and dwell time vary by formulation and purpose. These examples are specific to the named U.S. products, not universal instructions:
- Lysol Toilet Bowl Cleaner with Bleach, 24 oz: Its U.S. product page directs users to flush, apply 4 fl oz to coat the bowl including under the rim, scrub thoroughly, and rinse the brush. Sanitizing and disinfecting instructions specify different dwell times; follow the page and product label for the purpose and current directions. Lysol product directions.
- Clorox Toilet Bowl Cleaner—Clinging Bleach Gel: Its U.S. page directs users to flush, apply 6 oz under and around the rim, scrub, wait 10 minutes, then flush. Follow the current label for this formulation. Clorox product directions.
Do not mix toilet-cleaning products
For Clorox foaming toilet bomb tablets, Clorox warns: “Do not use or mix with other household chemicals such as other toilet bowl cleaners, bleach or products containing ammonia.” The warning applies to that product; read and follow the compatibility warnings on any cleaner you use. What a lab comparison can—and cannot—tell you
Consumer Reports describes applying a standardized water-based cleaner solution to a prepared, soiled porcelain plate, then dragging a brush across it for three minutes. That is a controlled comparison method, not a household trial and not evidence of BHG’s testing process. It can inform a comparison under those test conditions, but it does not verify how a product will work on every toilet, stain, or cleaning routine.
