On Samsung’s U.S. support guidance, HC is a heating error indicating that the dryer is getting too hot. The first checks are the lint screen and vent system, which can trap heat when clogged. If HC remains after the vent is clean and the recommended test is rerun, contact Samsung support for service rather than guessing at a replacement part.
What the HC code means
Samsung U.S. groups HC with hE, HC4, and 1 HC as heating errors. Its guidance says the dryer is getting too hot; the code alone does not identify a particular failed component. Samsung’s error-code guide names a clogged lint screen or vent system as the most common cause because restricted airflow can trap heat.
Samsung also notes that low voltage can cause insufficient heating on some electric dryers. That is a possible issue to have checked by an electrician when relevant, not a diagnosis that applies to every HC display.
What to check first
- Clean the lint screen. Remove lint and make sure the screen is clear.
- Check and clean the vent system. Follow the instructions for your dryer model and the vent layout. Use only a cleaning method suitable for that setup.
- Check the exact model’s manual. Samsung says codes, settings, and procedures can vary by model and region; use the manual and support guidance for the dryer’s sales market. Samsung’s model-specific diagnostics guidance explains that procedures can differ.
If HC appears during the vent blockage test
Samsung’s U.S. instructions for this test specify that the drum should be cool and empty, and the door should remain closed during the test. The button sequence varies by model, so follow the instructions for your dryer rather than trying a sequence from another model. Consult Samsung’s diagnostics guidance and the owner’s manual for the correct procedure.

- Check that the power cord is properly connected and that the drum is empty.
- Run the vent blockage test again according to the model’s instructions.

When to call for service

Why country and model matter
Support descriptions are not identical across markets. Samsung Australia groups HC and HE under “Compressor overheating / High temperature heating check” and advises checking the breaker, having heating-element wiring checked by a licensed professional, cleaning the lint filter, and seeking service if the code persists. That regional description is not a universal diagnosis for every Samsung dryer. Use the manual and Samsung support page for your specific model and country.
