Leopardwood and lacewood are related-looking but distinct wood groups in the narrower botanical trade usage: leopardwood is associated with Roupala, while lacewood usually refers to Panopsis species. Both can show bold flecks from their broad rays, especially when quartersawn, but leopardwood is substantially heavier and harder in the cited reference profiles. Because “lacewood” is also used loosely for other figured woods, ask for the botanical name when the species matters.

How leopardwood and lacewood differ

The Wood Database’s profiles associate leopardwood with Roupala montana and other Roupala species; its lacewood profile covers Panopsis species, including P. rubescens and P. sessilifolia. The names are not interchangeable in this narrower usage, even though the woods can resemble one another.

Comparison Leopardwood (Roupala) Lacewood (Panopsis)
Typical appearance Medium to dark reddish brown, often with grey or light-brown rays that create conspicuous spots or flecks. The Wood Database profile. Reddish brown, often with grey or light-brown rays that create lace-like flecks. The Wood Database profile.
Average dried weight 885 kg/m³, The Wood Database reference value, accessed 2026; variation by species, stock and moisture condition is possible. 580 kg/m³, The Wood Database reference value, accessed 2026; variation by species, stock and moisture condition is possible.
Janka hardness 9,560 N, The Wood Database reference value, accessed 2026. 3,740 N, The Wood Database reference value, accessed 2026.
Workability Fairly difficult to work; density and planing tearout can be concerns. It glues and finishes well. Fairly easy overall, though planing tearout and some cutter blunting can occur.
Durability The profile reports most species as very durable against decay. The profile rates it non-durable and susceptible to insect attack.
Common uses Veneer, cabinetry, fine furniture, instruments and turned objects. Veneer, cabinetry, fine furniture, instruments and turned objects.

The weight and hardness figures are wood-property reference values, not guarantees for an individual board. The profiles do not give publication dates; the figures are attributed to The Wood Database and identified by access year.

How to tell leopardwood from lacewood

Check the botanical name first

Look for Roupala on a leopardwood listing and Panopsis on lacewood sold in the narrower sense. A common name by itself is not reliable proof of species. The Wood Database notes that “lacewood” is used loosely for different figured woods.

Compare the board’s color, weight and cut

Leopardwood is typically darker and, in the cited profiles, considerably heavier. These are useful clues rather than definitive tests: color varies, and a board’s weight depends on its dimensions and moisture condition. Both woods show their ray fleck most strongly on quartersawn surfaces, so figure alone cannot establish the species.

Use endgrain details only as a specialist clue

The leopardwood profile reports wider-spaced parenchyma bands—about 3–4 per mm—than the lacewood profile’s 5–6 per mm. This is a specialist identification detail, not a guaranteed visual test for every board.

Allow for other woods sold as lacewood

Northern silky oak (Cardwellia sublimis) and southern silky oak (Grevillea robusta) can resemble lacewood and may be marketed as Australian lacewood. The Wood Database’s Proteaceae overview provides context on related genera and ray-flecked woods; macroscopic identification can still be difficult.

Which wood should you choose for a project?

If the flecked pattern is the priority, compare the actual boards: cut orientation and the size of the rays change the look. If weight, hardness or machining effort matters, the cited profiles favor Panopsis lacewood as the lighter and softer option; leopardwood is heavier and harder, and planing may require more care.

What to ask a lumber supplier

  • What is the botanical name—Roupala, Panopsis or another species?
  • What are the board’s dimensions and moisture condition?
  • Is the board quartersawn if you are buying it for prominent ray fleck?

Leopardwood hardwood lumber is listed as a product category by G&H Hardwoods. Availability varies by supplier; the listing does not establish that a particular board is in stock.
