Blue, green, or turquoise tap water is often linked to copper from new or corroding plumbing, but color alone cannot identify the cause or show whether the water is safe. A toilet-bowl cleaner backflow or another plumbing or water-system problem can also produce discoloration. Check whether it is truly the water, compare hot and cold taps and different fixtures, then contact your water utility if the color persists.
Check whether the water itself is blue
- Fill a clean, clear, colorless glass with cold water and view it in another room. Reflections or lighting can make clear water appear blue. Milwaukee Water Works recommends this check.
- Compare hot and cold water, and check more than one fixture, including a toilet. If only hot water is discolored, the water heater or its connected pipes may be involved. If only one fixture is affected, the issue may be local to that fixture or its plumbing. Portland Water Bureau describes these checks.
- Run cold water for one to two minutes and see whether the color clears. Portland says discoloration that clears may point to household plumbing; if it persists, report it to the utility. Follow your own utility’s directions if its flushing procedure differs.
- If the color persists, affects several fixtures, or returns, contact your water utility or health department and ask about copper testing. For a private well, ask the local health agency about testing. A test—not the water’s appearance—is needed to identify copper or assess its level.
Common causes of blue or green water
New or corroding copper plumbing
Copper pipes can contribute copper to water. Water that sits in copper plumbing may absorb copper, and new copper lines can sometimes make water appear blue or green. Existing copper pipes can also corrode. Blue-green stains around sinks or fixtures are a clue worth investigating: Washington State Department of Health says such stains usually indicate copper in drinking water. But staining and water color are not measurements, so request a test rather than treating either as proof of a specific concentration. Milwaukee Water Works, Portland Water Bureau, and Washington State Department of Health describe copper plumbing and related discoloration.
Some water conditions can affect how long discoloration associated with new copper lines lasts. Tucson Water notes that softened water may take longer to clear because a softener removes minerals. There is no reliable schedule that applies to every home; persistent or recurring color should be investigated rather than simply waited out. Tucson Water and the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy identify new plumbing and copper-pipe corrosion as possible causes.
Automatic toilet-bowl cleaner and a cross-connection
Milwaukee Water Works identifies automatic blue toilet-bowl cleaner as another possible source. If a plumbing cross-connection allows toilet-bowl water to flow backward into a water pipe, a loss of pressure may allow cleaner to reach other fixtures. If you suspect this, treat it as a plumbing problem: run water for a few minutes, and call a licensed plumber if the color remains. A plumber can investigate the potential cross-connection. Milwaukee Water Works explains this possibility.

A utility or broader water-system issue
If multiple fixtures are affected and flushing does not clear the color, a utility event or another issue in the water system may be involved. Water-quality problems can arise at the source or as water travels through pipes. Contact the utility for local guidance; if contamination is suspected, CDC advises contacting the water utility or health department. Portland Water Bureau recommends reporting ongoing discoloration, and the CDC explains what to do when contamination is suspected.
Is blue tap water safe to drink?
Color cannot tell you whether water is safe or how much copper it contains. Copper is an essential nutrient, but excessive exposure can cause nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and stomach pain, according to the CDC’s copper guidance. If the discoloration persists or you suspect contamination, ask your utility or health department what testing and precautions are appropriate for your home.

While you seek advice, CDC recommends using cold water for drinking and cooking because hot water dissolves copper more readily. If a faucet has not been used for six or more hours, flush it by running the water for at least 15 seconds before drinking or using it. These are interim precautions, not a substitute for finding the cause of persistent discoloration.
Do not boil water as a way to remove suspected chemical contamination: boiling does not remove chemicals. Nor should you assume a standard pitcher filter will remove copper. If testing confirms copper and treatment is needed, CDC lists reverse osmosis, ultrafiltration, distillation, and ion exchange; use a system certified to remove copper. See CDC’s copper guidance for treatment methods.

When to call the utility, health department, or a plumber
- Contact the water utility: the color persists after flushing, affects several fixtures, or returns. Ask whether it recommends a copper test or has local instructions for discolored water.
- Contact the health department: you use a private well, need local testing guidance, or suspect contamination.
- Call a licensed plumber: discoloration appears tied to your home’s plumbing, copper pipes show signs of corrosion, or a toilet-cleaner cross-connection or backflow is possible. Ask the plumber to identify the likely source and explain the repair options.
CDC’s advice is direct: “Contact your drinking water utility or health department if you think your tap water is contaminated with harmful chemicals.” CDC guidance on contaminated water also explains whom to contact.

Ask your utility or a qualified laboratory how to collect a sample and interpret the result. Some utilities provide test kits that include copper; Portland Water Bureau says customers can ask about one. Follow the utility’s sampling instructions, since how and when a sample is collected can affect what it tells you. Portland Water Bureau’s discolored-water guidance describes contacting it about a test kit.

If a test confirms copper and treatment is warranted, compare systems by their specific copper-removal certification, installation requirements, replacement schedule for filters or membranes, and ongoing costs. Get advice based on your test result and water conditions; a generic filtration claim is not enough to establish copper removal. If plumbing is the source, compare a plumber’s diagnosis and proposed repair scope before choosing a repair. The right response depends on where the copper or discoloration is coming from.
