For most enclosed backyard chicken coops, spread clean, dry pine or other softwood shavings over the floor. Start with about 4 inches, then keep the litter dry by removing wet patches, adding fresh material and maintaining ventilation. The right depth depends on the bedding system and conditions; no single material or measurement suits every coop.
Choose litter for the coop floor
Litter sits on the coop’s underlying floor—whether concrete, wood or earth—and cushions birds’ feet, absorbs moisture, dilutes manure and gives chickens material to scratch in. For many enclosed backyard coops, clean softwood shavings are a practical default.
Softwood and pine shavings
Extension guidance describes wood shavings as absorbent indoor litter, and pine shavings are a commonly used option. Choose clean, dry material without contaminants. These recommendations do not establish that all bagged products are equivalent, or that one brand has been tested against another.
Straw
Straw can work, including in a deep-bedding system, but its performance depends on moisture and upkeep. It may mat or become slimy when wet, so it needs monitoring and prompt attention to damp patches. Guidance warning about straw comes from particular poultry-house contexts; it is not a blanket ban for every backyard coop.

- Shavings are low-moisture, which is why our bedding is ultra-absorbent
Sawdust and agricultural by-products
Sawdust, rice hulls, peanut hulls and other agricultural materials appear in poultry-litter guidance, but availability and performance vary. UC poultry-house guidance notes that chicks may eat sawdust, making larger shavings the more straightforward choice for general coop use. UF/IFAS reports limited success with rice hulls in the broiler-house conditions it discusses; that finding should not be treated as a universal result for every flock.
Sand belongs to a separate floor-covering decision
Sand is discussed in guidance for outdoor runs and scratching areas, but the reviewed sources do not establish it as the universal indoor-coop bedding choice. Cornell recommends absorbent litter such as wood shavings inside and identifies dry sand as an outdoor-run ground cover. A bottomless portable coop that moves over ground is another distinct system, not the same as bedding a fixed coop floor.

Set bedding depth for the system
Published depth recommendations vary because they describe different settings and methods, rather than one proven optimum:
| Guidance | Recommended depth | Context |
|---|---|---|
| Cornell Cooperative Extension | About 4 inches | Moisture-absorbent litter on an indoor coop floor; page date not stated. |
| UC Agriculture and Natural Resources / ATTRA | 2–4 inches | Typical poultry-house litter depth in its 2007 publication, Poultry House Management for Alternative Production. |
| University of Minnesota Extension | 4–6 inches | Deep-bedding option for winter, with soiled top material turned down and fresh bedding added. |
| University of New Hampshire Extension | 4–6 inches | Natural material such as straw or pine shavings for floor insulation in an open-bottom coop; 2024 guidance. |
Use the figure that fits your floor and management method, then judge the litter by its condition. A deeper layer is not a substitute for keeping the coop dry and ventilated.

Keep litter dry and manage wet spots
Moisture management matters more than choosing a supposedly perfect material. Wet litter can cake and contribute to ammonia and pathogen problems. Waterers are a common place to check for dampness; also look for leaks and condensation.
- Remove or rake out localized wet or caked litter, especially around waterers.
- Add clean, dry bedding where needed.
- Fix leaks and address condensation so water does not keep reaching the floor.
- Maintain ventilation that lets moisture-laden air escape.
A persistent ammonia smell or damp surfaces signal that cleaning and ventilation need attention. Simply adding fresh litter over a continuing moisture problem will not address its cause.

Deep bedding is a management system
For winter, Minnesota Extension describes a deep-bedding approach using 4–6 inches of straw or shavings: turn soiled material from the top down and add fresh bedding on top. The system calls for monitoring conditions and doing a deeper clean in spring. It is not just a matter of putting down more material, and bedding does not replace a dry, appropriately ventilated shelter.

UConn Extension lists useful litter traits including absorbency, quick drying, low thermal conductivity, freedom from contaminants, non-toxicity, local availability, cost-effectiveness and potential for reuse. In practical terms, choose a material you can source cleanly and keep dry, and consider how readily you can remove soiled bedding and dispose of or compost it.

As University of Massachusetts Amherst Extension puts it, “The media used for flooring is a matter of preference.” It also advises placing soft bedding such as wood shavings over flooring to lessen strain on birds’ feet. Preference still has limits: material condition, moisture control and the coop’s layout all affect whether a choice works.
