How to Make a Cutting Board Bird Feeder: What’s Known—and What Isn’t

A cutting-board bird feeder is a real upcycling idea, but the available listing is not a build plan. Learn what it establishes and how to think about seed, placement and feeder care.

A cutting board can be repurposed as a bird feeder, but the available description of this particular project is not a complete set of build instructions. It names a drill machine, pallet wood, pipe and a funnel without giving dimensions, attachment points or an assembly sequence. That is not enough to build a safe, sturdy feeder by following a reproducible plan. Here’s what the idea supports, what to check before building, and how to care for any feeder you use.

What the cutting-board feeder instructions actually establish

A secondary DIY roundup lists a project that reuses an old cutting board and mentions a drill machine, pallet wood, pipe and a funnel. It does not explain what each item does, how the parts connect, or how the feeder is mounted. The listing therefore confirms the concept, not a complete bill of materials or step-by-step design. See Bright Stuffs’ project roundup.

Without a verified plan, dimensions and attachment details, it would be guesswork to prescribe where to drill, how to support the board, or how to hang it. Treat the named items as clues from one secondary listing—not as a universal shopping list. A drill may be needed if a verified design calls for holes, but the listing does not establish a safe drilling pattern or mounting method.

How to assess a plan before building

Before cutting or fastening anything, find a set of instructions for the exact design that explains the board’s role, the seed-holding arrangement, the perch or access point, and how the finished feeder attaches securely. Check that the plan also addresses rain exposure and how to remove seed and clean every surface. If those details are missing, do not infer them from the materials list.

Feeder-care considerations matter when choosing a design. Cornell Lab advises that a good feeder should be sturdy, keep seed dry and be easy to clean. Its classroom guidance notes that plastic and metal feeders are generally easier to clean and sanitize than wooden ones; it does not determine whether a particular cutting board is suitable for outdoor use. Read Cornell Lab’s feeder-selection guidance alongside its feeder-maintenance advice when weighing a DIY design against a purpose-built feeder.

Choose seed for the feeder and birds

Birdseed is a supported general choice for a seed feeder, but these sources do not identify one best blend for every feeder design or locality. Match food to the openings and dispensing arrangement in the plan, and use a birdseed guide such as Audubon’s bird-feeding and care guidance to make a more specific choice for the birds in your area. Audubon’s documented recycled-carton project also uses birdseed, but that does not validate a cutting-board design.

  • Easily Installation: Installing the bird feeders outside is incredibly simple. Just refer to the user manual for guidance and secure a couple of screws to begin your bird watching experience.
  • Bird Feeders with Drainage Feature: Our bird feeders efficiently keep the seed dry even during rainy days due to a specially designed structure, such as a weatherproof roof and perches. Despite the absence of baffles on the sides of the bottom, the birdseed remains secure and water drains automatically, ensuring the seed stays dry for the birds to relish.
  • Perfect Gift for Family with Kids: feeders in the garden to entice a range of birds, such as vibrant cardinals, can aid children in discovering different bird species and fostering a deeper connection with the natural world. Additionally, this feeder serves as an exquisite ornament for the garden.

Place the feeder where birds have cover without giving predators an ambush point

Position feeding activity near dense trees, shrubs or a brush pile so birds have cover, while leaving enough separation that predators cannot use that cover to ambush birds at the feeder. The National Wildlife Federation also recommends spreading feeder activity rather than concentrating it in one place. Its bird-feeder tip sheet offers general siting advice; it does not establish a mounting height for a cutting-board feeder.

Clean the feeder regularly and let it dry fully

Audubon reports that Project FeederWatch recommends cleaning seed feeders about every two weeks. Audubon also describes every other week as a useful starting interval for seed and suet feeders, with more frequent cleaning in hot or humid conditions. Treat that interval as practical guidance, not a guarantee that every feeder can wait two weeks regardless of weather or visible contamination. See Audubon’s feeder-cleaning guidance, updated April 24, 2024.

Zeqeey Hanging Wooden Bird Feeder, Outdoor Large Capacity Wood Birdfeeder for Feeding Outside Garden Wild Birds Finches Robin Sparrow Blue Jay Chickadees
  • The wooden bird feeder is made of lightweight wood planks, which is stable, durable, and beautiful. It is hung up to provide a feeding place for native birds such as Cardinals, Chickadees, Blackbirds, Blue Jays, Sparrows, Robins.
  • There are open feeding windows on four sides, which can attract multiple species of birds to forage in different directions. The tray space around the bottom reduces food waste and makes it easier for birds to land, which brings together the birds in the garden.
  • The lid on the top can be easily opened, which is very convenient for adding bird seed foods such as wheat, peanuts, corn, sunflower seed hearts and nuts. And the acrylic sheets on both sides can also be removed, which can clean up leftover birdfood when needed.
  • The large capacity bird feeder container can hold about 2 liters of mixed seed food. By default, there is a fuzzy protective film on the surface of the acrylic sheet, please peel it off before installation, and you will get a clear and transparent view to see the seed food in the container.
  • Reserved screw holes and equipped screws and screwdrivers make it easy to assemble this solid hanging wood bird feeder. Please read the installation manual carefully before assembly.
  1. Discard uneaten seed rather than scattering it on the ground.
  2. Scrub the feeder with soap and water.
  3. Sanitize with a solution of one part bleach to nine parts water, as advised by Audubon and Cornell Lab.
  4. Rinse thoroughly and let every part dry completely before refilling.

Wear rubber gloves when cleaning, as Cornell Lab recommends. Sunny Kellner, a wildlife rehabilitation and outreach specialist at the Sharon Audubon Center, emphasized the disease-prevention reason for this routine: “Regularly emptying and disinfecting feeders is of utmost priority when feeding birds to prevent cross-contamination of many potential illnesses that birds can share at feeders,” according to Audubon New York’s January 13, 2023 article, “Keeping Your Feeder Birds Safe This Winter.”

A documented DIY alternative uses a different design

If your priority is a set of published DIY steps rather than using a cutting board, Audubon documents a separate feeder made from a milk or juice carton. Its project uses cord, rope, ribbon or wire; paint and decorations; craft or hot glue; and birdseed. The instructions cut a food opening, add a stick perch and hanging holes, then fill and hang the carton, with adult supervision. This is a carton design—not instructions for turning a cutting board into a feeder. Read the complete Audubon recycled-material feeder project before attempting it.
