The most effective driveway upgrades make the drive feel connected to the house and garden—not like an isolated strip of paving. Start by choosing a surface and drainage approach that suit your site, then use pattern, edging, planting, and lighting to give the entrance a finished look. These 15 ideas offer ways to improve curb appeal; none guarantees an increase in property value.
Choose a surface that fits the site
Material affects more than appearance. Slope, soil, waterlogging, parking frequency, accessibility, and upkeep all help determine which driveway surface is practical. Permeable paving can let water drain through a purpose-built system, but the surface alone does not provide drainage: its construction and base must be suitable for the site. The UK government’s guidance on permeable surfacing of front gardens describes several options and runoff approaches. It is UK-specific; check local requirements and seek qualified local advice where needed.
1. Use permeable block pavers
Choose permeable block pavers in a color that relates to the brick, siding, stone, or trim on the house. The blocks can create a more finished entrance while the purpose-built system allows water to drain through. Confirm that the base and installation suit local soil and drainage conditions; a permeable product by itself is not a complete drainage solution. Belgard’s driveway paver ideas covers color, patterns, borders, and permeable designs.
2. Lay pavers in a herringbone pattern
A deliberate pattern gives a broad paved area visual rhythm and makes the driveway read as a designed surface. Herringbone is one option; choose a layout and paver color that complement the house rather than compete with its architecture. Belgard’s design material illustrates paver pattern options.

3. Frame the drive with a contrasting border
Run a contrasting paver band along one or both sides to define the driveway’s edges. A border can make a simple field of paving look more intentional, particularly where the drive meets a lawn or planting bed. Keep the edge treatment compatible with the main surface and the space available for vehicles.
4. Give the street end a distinct apron
Use a different paver pattern, color, or material at the entrance from the street to mark the transition onto the property. An apron creates a visual arrival point without changing the entire driveway. Check that the change in material or level does not interfere with drainage or access.
5. Pave wheel tracks and leave a planted center
Two paved wheel tracks with grass or another suitable ground treatment between them can reduce the amount of continuous hard surface and give a drive a lighter, greener appearance. The arrangement needs accurate track spacing and a stable surface where tires travel. Consider how often vehicles park there: grass may struggle under frequent or prolonged parking.

6. Pair loose gravel with planting
Decorative gravel can suit a more informal landscape and look at home alongside planting. It is a poor fit for steep drives, where loose stone can scatter, and it is unsuitable where a firm, accessible route is required, including wheelchair access. Consider how gravel will stay in place and how it will be maintained.
7. Consider reinforced grass or gravel
Reinforcement grids can support a grass or gravel surface while retaining a greener or more textured appearance than a fully paved drive. Grass versions need mowing and other upkeep, and reinforced grass may not tolerate long-term continuous parking. Match the system to the amount of vehicle use rather than choosing it on appearance alone.
8. Choose porous asphalt or pervious concrete
Porous asphalt and pervious concrete offer permeable surface options with a more uniform appearance than patterned block paving. Their performance depends on appropriate construction, including the underlying system, and installation may call for specialist experience. Check local suitability and maintenance needs before choosing either material.

Plan where the water goes
Drainage is part of the driveway design, not an afterthought. A permeable surface needs a compatible construction system and base; a conventional surface may instead direct runoff to a suitable planted area or soakaway. Slope, soil, and waterlogging affect which approach will work. The UK government guidance describes permeable surfaces and other runoff options; its advice is for the UK, so local rules and site conditions should guide decisions elsewhere.
9. Direct conventional paving toward a rain garden
If a permeable surface is not the right fit, a conventional paved drive may be designed to direct runoff toward a planted border rain garden where the site can support one. The route and receiving area must be suitable for the site’s slope and soil; do not assume any planting bed can manage driveway runoff.

A soakaway can provide a place for runoff to infiltrate where ground conditions allow. Its location and suitability depend on the site’s drainage and soil, so assess those conditions before planning one. A local professional can help determine whether the approach is appropriate.

Make the driveway part of the landscape
Edges and transitions help the driveway relate to the house, garden, and front walk. Belgard’s design examples show how paving colors, borders, and landscape elements can work together; HGTV’s driveway entrance landscaping ideas offers examples of gravel, planting, and transitions.
11. Add a planted bed or decorative-stone edge
Use planting beds or decorative stone alongside the drive to soften a large expanse of paving and connect it to the rest of the garden. Keep the edge treatment consistent with the home’s exterior and leave adequate room for vehicles, doors, and routine maintenance.
12. Use low-growing edge planting
Choose planting that stays clear of vehicle movement and sight lines, especially near the street and turning areas. Suitable species depend on local climate and conditions; plan for mature size as well as the appearance of new plants.

13. Relate paving lines and colors to the house
Echo a color or line from the home’s architecture in the pavers, border, or apron. A restrained connection can make the driveway feel integrated without matching every material exactly. Belgard’s design resource shows how paving patterns, colors, and borders can contribute to a coordinated entrance.
14. Soften the transition to the front walk
Where space and layout allow, use a curved or softened landscape transition between the driveway and front walk. Natural-looking paving and planting can help the two routes feel connected rather than abruptly meeting. Adapt the shape to the actual site so it does not compromise parking or access.
15. Add landscape lighting to the arrival
Plan lighting as part of the overall landscape rather than as an isolated finishing touch. Lights can emphasize the entrance or nearby planting after dark; choose their placement and type for the layout and local requirements. Homebuilding & Renovating includes driveway lighting among its design ideas in 25 driveway ideas that are smart, stylish and practical; the source does not compare specific fixtures.

| Approach | Visual character | Runoff and site considerations | Parking and upkeep |
|---|---|---|---|
| Permeable block pavers | Patterned, with options for color and borders | Needs a compatible system and base; check soil, slope, and local requirements | Installation must be correct; permeable systems need care to avoid clogging |
| Porous asphalt or pervious concrete | More uniform than patterned block paving | Permeability depends on suitable construction and site conditions | Specialist installation may be needed; follow appropriate maintenance guidance |
| Gravel | Informal; pairs naturally with planting | Loose stone can scatter and is unsuitable for steep drives | Not suitable for wheelchair access; consider ongoing upkeep |
| Reinforced grass or gravel | Greener or more textured than a continuous paved surface | Suitability depends on the system and site | Grass needs mowing and may not tolerate long-term continuous parking |
| Conventional paving with directed runoff | Broad choice of paved looks and layouts | Runoff needs a suitable route, such as a rain garden or soakaway where site conditions allow | Plan drainage and installation for the particular site |
Check the practical details before committing
- Drainage: Decide whether water will pass through the surface or be directed to a suitable receiving area.
- Site conditions: Account for slope, soil, and waterlogging; these can rule out an otherwise attractive solution.
- Access: Consider wheelchair access and other needs for a firm, even route; loose gravel is not suitable for wheelchair access.
- Use: Estimate how often vehicles will park and whether they will remain in one place for long periods, especially with grass-based systems.
- Maintenance: Allow for mowing where grass is used and care to prevent clogging in permeable systems.
- Installation: Correct construction matters for permeable systems. Seek experienced, qualified local help when the design or site calls for it.
- Local requirements: The UK government guidance is UK-specific. Confirm applicable rules and advice for your location.
