Hot hide glue remains useful for woodworking repairs and furniture restoration when you want a joint that can later be softened with warm water or need fresh glue to bond to an existing hide-glue joint. It works well when prepared and applied hot, but it takes more setup and temperature control than a ready-to-use adhesive.
What hot hide glue is—and why use it
Hide glue is made from collagen in cattle hides. WOOD Magazine says the adhesive has held wood together for more than 5,000 years; that is the magazine’s historical claim, not a separately verified measurement. WOOD Magazine, updated November 15, 2022.
Its particular value is repairability. Warm water can soften a hide-glue joint for disassembly, and fresh hide glue bonds to old hide glue. Those qualities can help when repairing or restoring furniture. Once fully dry, a hide-glue joint can have strength and rack resistance comparable to a similar synthetic-glue joint, but that comparison does not establish suitability for every joint or exposure condition.
Choose a form and grade
Dry glue
Dry hide glue is sold ground, as flakes, or as pearls. WOOD Magazine says the forms become the same glue when melted; ground glue needs the least soaking time, while pearls need the longest. Dry glue has a long shelf life; the article describes it as unlimited, but follow the storage guidance for the specific product.

Grades and working time
Different grades can offer different open times. WOOD Magazine describes grade 379 as having almost instant tack and needing about a minute of hand pressure, grade 135 as offering up to about three minutes of open time, and grade 192 as offering about two minutes and being a reasonable starting point. These are the magazine’s 2022 descriptions, not a substitute for current specifications from the glue maker. Colder workpieces and shop conditions shorten open time, so test the timing on scrap before committing to a repair.
Prepare hot hide glue
- Check the maker’s directions. Measure cold water and dry glue in the proportions specified for that product; do not assume one mix ratio applies to every glue.
- Let it soak. Allow the glue to absorb the water until it becomes lumpy and gelatinous. Ground glue generally needs less soaking than pearls.
- Heat it gently. Use a glue pot or a jar set in a temperature-controlled hot-water bath. A candy thermometer can monitor the bath in a kitchen-style setup.
- Maintain the working temperature. WOOD Magazine recommends 135°–145°F for the glue. It warns that holding glue hotter for several hours reduces its strength. Properly heated glue should have a consistency similar to maple syrup.
WOOD Magazine’s stated working range is specific to its guidance; the glue manufacturer’s current instructions take precedence. Avoid prolonged overheating rather than trying to speed preparation by raising the temperature.

- Ready-to-Use Hide Glue: No mixing, heating, or stirring required; convenient liquid formula for professional and hobbyist woodworkers.
- Ideal for Fine Furniture & Antique Restoration: Slow set allows precise assembly and easy disassembly when needed, perfect for repairing antiques and musical instruments.
- Great Strength & Creep Resistance: Provides long-lasting bonds that resist movement over time while maintaining wood stability.
- Excellent Sandability & Finish Compatibility: Dries smooth and is unaffected by finishes, allowing for flawless refinishing and final touches.
- Unique Crackling Effect on Wood: Can be used to create decorative crackling patterns, adding aesthetic detail to woodworking projects.
Apply it before it cools
- Prepare the joint first. Dry-fit the parts and have clamps ready, since hide glue’s open time is short and decreases when the parts or shop are cold.
- Brush glue onto both surfaces while it is liquid and within the recommended temperature range.
- Bring the parts together. Rub the surfaces together where possible, then clamp the joint.
- Clean squeeze-out with a wet cloth and leave the joint to dry.
Warm-water cleanup is convenient, but exposure to water later is also a consideration: WOOD Magazine warns that water-based finishes can soften hide-glue joints. Plan the finish and joint accordingly.
Can salt extend open time?
WOOD Magazine reports that adding table salt equal to 5% of the dry glue’s weight may add 3 to 4 minutes of open time; it reports that amounts up to 20% may allow 15 to 18 minutes and keep glue liquid at room temperature. This is a source-specific technique, not a general recipe. Use it only if the particular glue maker’s directions allow it, and test the modified glue before using it on a finished piece.

- Liquid Hide Glue: Made from just two non-toxic/organic ingredients - hydrolyzed collagen (hide glue) and urea. Superior strength in tight-fitting joints, and remains flexible after setting. It's the perfect glue for antique restoration, veneer work and lamination, instruments and modern woodworking.
- Open and Set Times: The formula has a 30-minute open time and requires 24 hours to dry completely. The glue dries by loss of moisture and starts to set in about an hour and be completely set in 24 - 48 hours. It's also reversible with heat and hot water, which makes repair or repositioning easy and convenient.
- Self-Bonding: Unlike modern glues, hide glue will bond to itself, so original hide glue doesn't need to be completely removed from components before reassembly, adding Old Brown Glue will reactivate the original hide glue and cure with it.
- To Use: No need for a hotpot! Stand the bottle in warm water for a few minutes until the glue becomes liquid and then use it as you would with any other glue. Viscosity is a function of temperature, it is best used at 120-140 degrees F, but do not exceed 180 degrees F.
- Shelf Life: Because it is organic and non-toxic, Old Brown Glue does have a shelf-life. Each bottle is marked with a “best before use” date for an 24-month shelf life from the date of manufacture so you can be sure of its quality, which can be extended if kept in a refrigerator, but is not required.
Store leftover glue and recognize when to discard it
The magazine says leftover mixed glue can be kept in an airtight container in the refrigerator and reheated without adding water. Discard it if it becomes watery or moldy. Follow the product maker’s storage and reuse instructions, since the magazine’s advice may not apply to every formulation.

WOOD Magazine describes Titebond Genuine Hide Glue as a ready-to-use alternative that avoids hot-pot preparation, bonds to old hide glue, and can be softened with water for disassembly. The article reported about 20 minutes of open time and cited a two-year shelf life and room-temperature storage recommendation attributed to Franklin International’s Bob Behnke. Those are historical statements from an article updated November 15, 2022; current product specifications and availability are not established here. Check the manufacturer’s current label before relying on its working time or storage life.

Trade-offs to weigh before choosing it
- Choose hot hide glue when repairability, compatibility with old hide glue, or the ability to disassemble a joint with warm water matters.
- Allow for preparation. Dry glue must be mixed, soaked, heated, and kept within a working temperature range.
- Account for the short working window. Parts and shop conditions affect open time, so plan clamping and rehearse on test pieces.
- Consider later exposure. Water-based finishes can soften hide-glue joints. WOOD Magazine separately warns that liquid hide glue can weaken under high humidity; that caution should not be generalized to hot hide glue.
- Compare the actual joint, not just the adhesive category. A strength comparison with a similar synthetic-glue joint does not settle performance under every finish, humidity level, or service condition.
