Yes—ash is good firewood when it is dry. Its heat output per cord is useful but generally below that of dense oak and hickory, while extension references describe favorable lighting, spark and smoke characteristics. The key is to check moisture: ash is not ready to burn just because it is ash.
How much heat does ash firewood produce?
Extension tables report different heat values for ash, so there is no single exact figure that applies to every load. The estimates vary by species and by the assumptions and methods behind each table.
| Wood | Reported heat per cord | Source and qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Green ash | 23 million BTU | Illinois Extension; year not stated on the source page. |
| Green ash | 19.9–21.1 million BTU | Oklahoma State University Extension; dry-wood recoverable heat range; year not stated. |
| White ash | 21.6–24.6 million BTU | Oklahoma State University Extension; dry-wood recoverable heat range; year not stated. |
| White ash | 24 million BTU | University of Arkansas System Division of Agriculture Extension; year not stated. |
| Red oak | 24–28 million BTU | University of Arkansas System Division of Agriculture Extension; year not stated. |
| Hickories | 25–28 million BTU | University of Arkansas System Division of Agriculture Extension; year not stated. |
For a buyer comparing stacked firewood, heat per cord is useful because it accounts for the wood’s density: a cord of denser wood contains more dry wood mass. At the same moisture content, most species provide approximately the same energy per pound, according to Iowa State University Extension and Outreach. That source lists ash among its higher-priority firewood species and estimates about 7,000 BTU per pound for wood at 20% moisture or air-seasoned for about a year.
How does ash burn compared with other firewood?
Heat is only one part of a practical comparison. Illinois Extension describes green ash as moderately easy to start and producing few sparks. In its white-ash table, Arkansas Extension rates the wood “Very Good” overall, with medium splitting difficulty, few sparks, low smoke and good coaling. Those are reference characteristics, not guarantees for every log; condition, size and moisture still matter.

- Choose ash when you want useful heat and favorable reference ratings for starting and sparks, provided the wood is dry.
- Consider oak or hickory when heat per cord is the priority; the Arkansas table reports higher ranges for red oak and hickories than for white ash.
- Compare seasoned wood with seasoned wood. Moisture affects usable heat and smoke, so a species comparison is less useful if one load is wetter than another.
How long should ash season before burning?
Plan on at least six months, but do not treat the calendar as proof that the wood is ready. The EPA recommends seasoning wood for at least six months and burning it below 20% moisture. Illinois Extension says firewood is generally dried for six to nine months after cutting fresh wood to get below that threshold. Weather, log size, stacking and airflow affect the result.
To help ash dry, split larger pieces and stack the wood off the ground where air can circulate. Cover the top to shed rain while leaving the sides open. Kansas State University Extension quotes Dave Bruton, a Kansas Forest Service utilization and marketing forester: “To speed the drying process, large pieces should be split, stacked above the ground on pallets or other supporting material, exposed to the sun, and stacked in an area with good air circulation.” Bruton says firewood at 15% to 20% moisture is considered seasoned and ready to burn.

- DRAIN HOLES AT BOTTOM -- Has pre-drilled holes in case water gets inside, which causes the wood to rot.
A wood moisture meter is a practical way to check instead of guessing. Test a freshly split face and follow the meter’s instructions; the EPA’s target is below 20%. Check ash before bringing it indoors or loading it into an appliance, rather than relying on its species or time in the stack.

Burn dry wood and use the stove or fireplace according to its instructions. The EPA advises keeping appliance doors closed except when loading or stoking, and warns against burning wet or green wood: excess moisture produces more smoke and less heat and contributes to chimney creosote. Put ashes in a covered metal container and store it outdoors on a nonflammable surface.

Buy and burn locally cut firewood when possible to reduce the risk of moving invasive forest pests, including emerald ash borer. Do not assume that an old treatment standard describes current transport rules. A 2009 U.S. Forest Service report examined ash-firewood heat treatment in a pest-risk context and described a 160°F core temperature held for 75 minutes for that research context; it is not a substitute for current law. Before transporting firewood, check the current agriculture or forestry authority for both the place it is coming from and the destination, since restrictions vary by state and region.
